USF Coach Eyes National Prominence

PLANT CITY - University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt said today that his goal is for USF to join the ranks of Florida college football powerhouses.

Leavitt, who grew up in St. Petersburg, recalled that even in the early- to mid-1970s, only the University of Florida was nationally known for football. Over the next few years, Florida State University and University of Miami became national contenders, he told community leaders today in Plant City.

There’s no reason why the “Big 3’ in state college football can’t “become the Big 4,’’ Leavitt said.

Leavitt and USF athletic director Doug Woolard were in Plant City this morning as featured speakers at the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce’s monthly breakfast meeting. Leavitt recalled starting the USF football program in 1996 with trailers for offices, a shoestring budget and several assistants whose pay was room and board.

The football program started as a dream but “there’s nothing you can’t do. I firmly believe that,’’ he said.

He appealed for continued support for Bulls football and envisioned the day when the team sells out Raymond James Stadium.

“If you can just do one thing, come to the games,’’ Leavitt said.

Absolutely true!  Leavitt has done a remarkable job.  11 years ago football was merely a dream, today a very good team, growing each year and getting better.
