You pick players who you think will get you the most points. I'm going off the top of my head, but for the standard Yahoo league, I think you start 1 QB 2 RBs 3 WRs 1 TE 1 K and a Defense. I may be wrong. Everytime a player in your starting line up gets a TD (6 points) or gains yards, you get more points. Basicaly, try and get a better lineup than the person you're playing that week and hope they don't have a down week.

One of my normal leagues died due some guys getting married.  

i thought this is why fantasy sports were created

Some leagues put up money, trophy, anything really. It's mainly for fun and to get you interested in every NFL game that is on TV.
