Bulls Eliminated From BIG EAST Tournament With 2-0 Loss To UConn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 25, 2007) – The fifth-seed University of South Florida lost 2-0 to the eighth-seeded Connecticut Huskies Friday night at the 2007 BIG EAST Baseball Championship held at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Bulls were shut out by the Huskies in back-to-back games in the double-elimination tournament.

In his fifth start of the season, senior right hander Yuri Higgins struck out six batters, but allowed two runs from two hits in the seventh to drop his record to 5-4 this season. Senior Danny Otero came in for relief in the seventh striking out one while allowing one run in 1.1 inning of work.

For the second game in a row, junior shortstop Walter Diaz started the game with a leadoff single, but like in the first game of the day, the Bulls couldn't bring him around to score.

After six and a half scoreless innings, the Huskies did their damage in the seventh inning, scoring two runs from three hits, including two doubles to the left side to win the game 2-0.

After Friday's loss the Bulls are 34-26 overall and will await the possibility of a berth into the NCAA Regional Tournament. Selections to the regional tournaments will be made at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 28.

Can not win win if you do not score. 18 innings straight.........  Highly Doubtful on a bid.

more like in the hands of UConn's pitchers.

Two full games by their pitchers, EIGHTEEN scoreless innings.

This team has no power whatsoever, too bad great pitching performances were wasted.

Obviously this is a dissapointing end to a season but This was a very successful season for our Bulls...I am very excited for next year with all the recruits thatare coming in.

This program is going in the right direction.

C'mon alau,  we had everything in our favor working for us to be part of the Championship Game and we totally blew it.  I can't think of a bigger choke in history.  We had two games against UConn (8 seed), and we got great pitching, and we still couldn't score.  We will never see that kind of pitching again in tournament action.  This is almost on the same level as the Yanks losing to the Red Sox a few years ago when they led 3-0 in the ALCS.

Where were our HITTERS?

isn't baseball a game of streaks?  you go on a streak and some times it lasts for a few weeks, and other times it only lasts a couple of games.  we had a good streak coming into the tourny, we just lost it.  it happens to the best of the teams out there, look at St. Johns, #1 seed, lost to us, and then lost to UConn in the losers bracket.  It happens, but I'm happy with how we did this year, we made it pretty far for Lelo's first year here as a coach, and if this year is any indication as to where our Baseball program is headed, it looks to be in the right direction.  Theres always next year.

Joe did you honestly expect Lelo to come in and his first year win the Big East.  I knew this would take time.  Obviously the bracket fell in our favor and maybe it was a choke but ultimately this was a great season.  We are making progress and Lelo has some great recruits coming in next year and there is no doubt we will be back.

In the meantime whoever says pitching and defense wins championships is a freakin moron.

I couldn't help but think about the disappointment against UConn football a few years ago....I'm starting to be a Huskie hater.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

Act like you’ve been there before. Turns out, for many of us, we haven’t been there before.
