12-1  when you beat few ranked teams in regular season means little

When you think about it, the only difference there is between going 12-1 beating ranked teams vs unranked teams is if you're a national championship contender.  Otherwise you just take your conference championship and move on.  Hell, what did going 12-0 mean for auburn?  Nothing more than Georgia winning the SEC another year with 2 losses.  Even in the top conferences, NC's are strongly based upon luck.

Miami(OH) was not, at any time of that season, considered one.  Part of this is due to a sissy schedule, but the reality of that team is that it was a 1 man show.  Big Ben had over 10 yards per ATTEMPT.  That includes drops, incompletions, everything.

Miami of Ohio finished 5th, just like we finished 20th in 2002, right?

actually, we did finish the season ranked in a few polls that season, after all we did go 9-2 that season.while we were ranked, i don't remember if it was at 20.
