Sanford Tosses 11 Ks In Bulls' 30th Victory Of The Year, An 8-2 Win Over SHU

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (May 12, 2007) – University of South Florida freshman right handed pitcher Shawn Sanford recorded 11 strikeouts in the Bulls' 8-2 victory over Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N..J.  The 11 Ks are a season-high for the Bulls.

Sanford struck out his first four batters in the game, then rung up two more in both the third and sixth innings. The freshman from Cinnaminson, N..J., struck out 11 of his 26 batters faced, allowing two hits and one run while walking two in 7.0 innings. Sanford is now 2-4 this season with 10 saves in 29 appearances.

The Bulls are now 30-21 overall and 12-11 in the BIG EAST while the Seton Hall Pirates drop to 21-24 overall and 6-14 in the league.

Sophomore third baseman Addison Maruszak drove in two runs and scored one in his 1-of-4 day at the plate. Junior outfielder Joey Angelberger was the only Bull with multiple hits, batting 2-of-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Bulls jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning after sophomore Mike Consolmagno drew a walk to start the game then scored as Maruszak picked up an RBI on a grounder to second base. The RBI was Maruszak's 37th of the year and 64th of his career.

In the third, USF notched a second run from two hits and a hit by pitch. Junior catcher Brad Karns started the inning with a single to the left side, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice bunt by Consolmagno. Junior shortstop Walter Diaz singled to right field, then Butler grounded out to the Pirate second-baseman, but tallied an RBI on the play as Consolmagno crossed the plate.

An inning later, SHU scored one run after a triple by the Pirates' leadoff batter and a ground out to Diaz at shortstop.

USF regained the two-run lead in the sixth as senior Ty Taborelli scored on a passed ball. Taborelli drew a walk, advanced to second on a bunt by Angelberger, then moved to third on a sac bunt by designated hitter Braulio Pardo. As junior Brandin Daniel battled at the plate, the Pirate catcher allowed a passed ball, which scored the Bulls' third run of the game.

The Bulls batted around in the seventh inning, exploding for five runs from four hits. Consolmagno, Maruszak and Taborelli each had a base hit while Angelberger sent a triple down the right field line in the inning. Maruszak, Taborelli and Angelberger each tallied RBIs in the inning.

In the eighth, junior Charles Cleveland made his USF pitching debut, striking out one, but allowing two hits, three walks and one run. The Pirates scored one in the eighth, reducing the Bulls' lead to six, 8-2.

After Cleveland walked a batter then gave up a single in the ninth, USF turned to freshman right handed pitcher Matt Quevedo to end the game. With two runners on, Quevedo struck out his first batter, then walked the second, but forced the batter into a double play to end the game.

Quevedo struck out one and walked one, allowing no hits or runs in an inning of work.

The Bulls and Pirates will conclude the series at noon on Sunday in New Jersey to round out the three-game BIG EAST series.
