Softball Claims No. 2 Seed In Championship; Plays Pittsburgh Thursday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 6, 2007) – The University of South Florida softball team earned the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and will face No. 7-seed Pittsburgh on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the Belleville Softball Complex in South Bend, Ind.

The winner of the Bulls-Panther contest will face the winner of the No. 3 Louisville-No. 6 Syracuse game. The semifinal is slated for Friday at 4 p.m.

USF’s first-round game features the same matchup from a year ago in the BIG EAST Championship. Pittsburgh, the No. 7 seed, upset the No. 2-Bulls, 2-1, and eliminated USF from the tournament. In the 2007 regular-season series, USF swept Pittsburgh on the road, winning 5-2, 4-0, on April 13.

The BIG EAST Championship consists of an eight-team field and the format is single elimination.

I wouldn't call it a bad season... if you look at the numbers... Ecks and Spence pitched over 200 hundred innings each last season. Now, you have four pitchers that shared the workload. This should mean fresh arms for Cristi, Bree, and Courtney for the long haul. I think we'll see a combination of Mosch and Ecks in the circle day in and day out with Bree coming in to save the day when help is needed.

I think Gordon will watch a lot from the dugout... but could be used against a weaker opponent to overpower them (say vs Pitt in the Big East tourney). The big game is obviously vs Louisville. I'm thinking Courtney starts... if she can go the distance, then Cristi gets the start vs Depaul in the championship.

Either way... we're tourney bound with revenge against UF on our minds for two early season losses.

Our bats need to stay awake... but we have been playing weaker competition during this ten game streak. Hopefully, the confidence of our girls is growing.

Go ladies... get'er done!

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
