USF WOMEN’S TENNIS

Women’s Tennis Will Meet Florida International To Open NCAA Tournament Play

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (May 1, 2007) – In a rematch of its regular season finale, the University of South Florida women’s tennis team will face Florida International in Gainesville on Sat., May 12 at 1 p.m. in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tennis Championships.

The draws, released Tuesday afternoon, will pit the No. 32 Bulls (15-7) against the No. 27 Golden Panthers (19-4) in a rematch of both squads’ regular season finales.  FIU claimed the April 15 match 4-2 in Miami.

Both USF and FIU earned automatic bids to the tournament by winning their respective conferences.  The Bulls defeated No. 2 Notre Dame in the finals of the BIG EAST Championships and Florida International beat South Alabama to claim the Sun Belt Conference title.

The Bulls feature two nationally ranked singles players, as senior Shadisha Robinson carries a No. 28 ranking and junior Courtney Vernon is 61st.  Both players earned key singles victories over Notre Dame that helped USF capture its first-ever BIG EAST crown.

The Golden Panthers feature No. 78 Paula Zabala in singles action.  The squad as a whole has garnered 13-straight victories, dating back to March 7.

BIG EAST runner-up Notre Dame earned the only other conference berth in the championships.  The Irish will host their region and face Illinois-Chicago in the first round.

On the other side of the Gainesville bracket, host institution and No. 4 seed overall, Florida will face Jacksonville in opening round action.  The winners of Saturday’s action will face off on Sun., May 13 at 1 p.m. in the second round.

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites (four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion. The matches shall be regulation dual matches with three (3) eight-game, pro-set doubles played for one team point, followed by six (6) singles matches, each valued at one team point, played best of three sets. Regular scoring will be used and a 12-point tiebreaker will be played at eight games all in doubles and at six games all in singles.

First- and second-round competition will be conducted May 11-13 with the winner of each site advancing to the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia. The team championship will be held May 18-22.

Notre Dame is ranked #2 in the country... We beat them... but it's like the NCAA hoops tourney. Just because we beat Georgetown two seasons ago, we would still be a 16 seed while GU was a seven or so.

I would assume because UF is the top seed and they were looking for a Florida site.  If we were the highest rank team it would most likely be us hosting and not UF.

Although we won the BIG EAST, we lost to FIU and are ranked behind UF and FIU.  I believe we did beat FIU in a pre-season tournament and when we lost to them the whether was horrible.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
