JSU signs East Oktibbeha guard

By David Brandt

david.brandt@clarionledger.com

The Jackson State men’s basketball team signed 6-foot-6 guard and second-team All-State selection Jenirro Bush today, the first announced signing for the basketball program during the offseason.

Bush, who led East Oktibbeha to a 33-5 record and the 1A state championship, averaged 24.4 points and 9.2 rebounds, seven assists and three steals per game his senior year. The Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen selection scored a season high of 42 against Choctaw Central.

“He’s a big-time point guard and we’re thrilled to add him to the team,” JSU coach Tevester Anderson said. “He’s got a big body and knows how to get to the rim. Plus, he’s got great court vision.”

Bush had originally committed to Arkansas, but backed off after coach Stan Heath was fired and former South Alabama coach John Pelphrey took his place.

“After coach Heath left Arkansas, I just kind of lost interest in going up there,” Bush said. “Jackson State was a school I had always thought about going to and I really didn’t look anywhere else.”

Coach Heath is working it hard. But it's so late in the year and we have a lot of needs.

As much as I want us to do well next year, I wouldn't mind if Coach held on to the scholarships.

Signed with Jackson state this morning. He was 2 points shy on his ACT.

Will be playing at arkansas fort smith (juco) Still, it was thought that Bush might go to prep school and reclassify to the class of 2008, but instead, he signed with Jackson State in early May. Bush, however, did not meet NCAA academic qualifications and was forced to go the junior college route.

Who is Jackson State? And because of 2 points on an ACT, he can't play D-I?

Jackson State is D-I (I-AA Championship Subdivision in football); they're an HBCU and they play in the SWAC.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
