Sorry, but i'm young.  I didn't even know that we USED to have a swimming team.  Not only that, but a National Championship Swim Team.  Whats up with this?!?!?!  Why don't we bring it back?!?!?! Lack of funding?!?!?!

I know we have the students that want to do it...I've seen the facebook groups about it.  I always wondered why we didn't have one...

They could have a womens and a mens...to get over the title 9 crap...right?!?!

Anyone?

$$$ I'm sure.

With what we've had to spend on other sports and what we'll need to spend to be competitive in the BE don't count on it any time soon. Only football and maybe basketball bring in any revenue. Lots of colleges have dropped sports. UM dropped basketball for a number of years and that was after having all pro Rick Barry.

There are just so many "minor" sports a school can carry.

USF has quite a few and most do well. We should be proud of that. Academic standing continues to rise so all in all we should be pretty happy.

I've always wondered this.

Not having a swim/dive team in the Tampa Bay area makes about as much sense as if Minnesota didn't have a hockey team.

Stupid.  Very stupid.

not sure, but it probably has something to do with title nine.  I may be wrong, but I think I remember something about dropping a couple of ladies sports because of funding problems then needing to drop some mens sports to even things out.

Money and equality i believe did the swim teams in, in favor of more poular sports.

We had reached the point where we were not competitive...don't know if it was coaching, funding or what but those two can often go hand in hand.  I believe the national championship was at a D2 or D3 level.  Is swimming a strong Big East sport?

Swimming was dropped in 1987 or 1988 due to a lack of funds.

which is why many sports have been droped at schools. My best friend was a scolarship tennis player at Younstown State but the program was droped bc of funding problems that were a result of title 9.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
