USF official: Grothe won’t miss playing time

University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe will not miss any playing time against Elon Sept. 1 after being charged with a second-degree misdemeanor last week for serving alcohol to an underage person at a local sports bar, USF assistant AD John Gerdes said.

“This will be dealt with internally,†Gerdes said.

USF AD Doug Woolard and Coach Jim Leavitt will not comment on the incident, Gerdes said.

Gerdes said USF officials were not aware Grothe was working at the Bull Ring Sports Bar and Grill. “The fact he was working there and did not tell us is not an NCAA violation,†Gerdes said.

Tony Dodds, Grothe’s attorney, said Grothe is no longer working at the sports bar.

USF student-athletes are supposed to notify their coaches about any outside employment, Gerdes said.

“We have an institutional rule that they [the student-athletes] have to clear their job with a [uSF] compliance officer,†Gerdes said.

This week USF’s compliance officials will meet with all of USF’s student-athletes to confirm if they have outside employment.
