USF Baseball Comes Up Short, 4-2, In Louisville Sunday Afternoon

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 29, 2007) – The University of South Florida baseball team scored two runs from three hits in the third and final game with Louisville, dropping their 11th BIG EAST game of the season 4-2 at Jim Patterson Stadium in Kentucky.

Freshman right handed pitcher Shawn Sanford picked up the loss in his first start of the season after striking out five, but allowing five hits and three runs in 4.1 innings. Senior Yuri Higgins came in to relieve Sanford, recording four Ks along with two hits and one run in 3.2 innings.

Junior first baseman Brandin Daniel was 1-for-2 with two drawn walks and an RBI while junior shortstop Walter Diaz was 1-for-3 with two walks.

The Cardinals scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game against the Bulls, taking the early 1-0 lead in Sunday's BIG EAST match up. USF scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the Cardinals answered with two in the fourth and one in the seventh to win the game 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.

In the fourth, junior second baseman Dexter Butler reached on an error by the Cardinals, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Daniel singled through the right side to score Butler and earn his 39th RBI of the season.

An inning later senior Nick Cardieri and Diaz hit back-to-back singles, then sophomore Braulio Pardo walked to load the bases for the Bulls with no outs. Senior Ty Taborelli sent a sac fly to left field, which scored Cardieri for the Bulls' second and final run of the game.

USF will not play again until next weekend when the Bulls host No. 19 Georgia Tech May 5-7 at Red McEwen Field. The Bulls and Yellow Jackets will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday, 6 p.m. on Sunday and noon on Monday.

10-11 in conference right now.  We need to make sure we get in the Conference Tourney.  As it stands now, we are currently in 6th place in the Big East.  Gotta take care of business the rest of the way.

Still a great season happening so don't lose interest Bulls fan or the program won't move forward.  Get out and support these guys if you live there locally for those of us who live way too far away.  You never know when a recruit may be attending a game to "check things out" and fairweather fans aren't attractive to anyone.

Based on the little I have seen and heard at the games and online that seems like a fair assessment.  I am impressed that in Year One the W/L has been improved and the team attitude has done a 180.

I think Rezz is right on, a couple years of Lelo recruits and we'll be ready to own the conference.  Until then, no "fire Lelo" threads...   ;)

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
