Imagine the Tribune decides, "Hey, let's look into this Grothe alcohol thing!" They publish the story and call it allegations or sources or whatever they need to call it so they can print it without finding out if it's true.

Then it doesn't matter if it's true because it's out there in the press. And it might go national on the wire services, and then we hear about it for years afterward. How long a shelf life did Cincinnati's 0% graduation rate have? Like 10 years?

All rumors are not created equal. If you start a thread like "I hear Ben Moffitt shaved his head", that's one thing. The Grothe rumor thread is a whole different deal.

Again, who cares?  Serving alcohol to minors?? really??  A slap on the wrist would be too big of a punishment.  

Regardless of the veracity of the rumor, serving alcohol to minors is SEVERE in the state of Florida.

If the minor goes on to kill someone in a car accident, the individual who served them can be charged with felony manslaughter.

If there's dirt out there, I'm sure a good reporter will find it... but you don't need to help them with five or six pages' worth of rehashing and speculation. You don't understand how easy it is for someone to take advantage of what you're saying and dump it all over the whole program.

OK, well what if the next one is something like "I saw Trae Williams with a big wad of cash at University Mall". I don't think some of the posters, especially some of the students, understand what sort of crap they can bring on when they go into gossip mode. That's what I've been trying to warn about all along here.
