Softball Sweeps Pittsburgh; Urbanik Hits Grand Slam and Gordon Posts Two Saves

PITTSBURGH (April 13, 2007) – Kristen Gordon recorded two saves and Danielle Urbanik hit a grand slam as the University of South Florida softball team swept Pittsburgh, 5-2, 4-0, in a doubleheader at Trees Field on Friday afternoon.

With the wins, the Bulls record improves to 33-19, 5-3 BIG EAST, while the Panthers drops to 16-27, 2-9 BIG EAST.

Bree Spence (7-4) was the game one winner, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with three Ks in four innings. Kristen Gordon picked up the save closing out the final three innings with a hit and four strikeouts. Courtney Mosch (8-3) won game two, scattering three hits with nine Ks in five and one-third shutout innings. Gordon picked up her second save pitching a hitless, scoreless one and one-thirds inning with four Ks.

In game one, the Bulls opened up the first inning with a 2-0 lead. Britta Giddens led off with a single to left field and stole second. Tara Toscano laid down a bunt for a single, and Kit Dunbar drew a four-pitch walk. With two outs, Alison Savarese singled to right field driving in two.

USF continued its scoring into the second inning adding three more to the scoreboard. A passed ball scored Liz Howell from third base. JoJo Medina singled in a run with a hit to right field and Danielle Urbanik scored another with a double to right center.

Pitt scored a run in the fourth and the fifth inning due to two USF misplays.

In the second game, Urbanik provided the only offense the Bulls needed and hit a grand slam in the first inning. Urbanik’s homer was the 14th of her career and ties her for sixth place all-time.

The Bulls will continue their road trip when they travel to Syracuse on Sunday for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
