USF Official Resigns From Student Life Post

By GARY HABER ghaber@tampatrib.com

Published: Jun 8, 2004

TAMPA - After more than 30 years as a college administrator, the past 10 at the University of South Florida, Harold Nixon was looking for a new career challenge.

Nixon, USF's vice president for student affairs and the school's highest-ranking black administrator, stepped down Monday, effective Aug. 25, to become a professor at USF's College of Education. He will teach in a master's degree program that trains student affairs professionals.

``You get to a time in your life where you want to try your hand at something else,'' Nixon said Monday.

Nixon, 65, had told USF officials as far back as four years ago that he planned to relinquish his role this year as administrator in charge of student life issues.

He came to USF in 1994 after six years at Wright State University in Ohio, where he was vice president for student affairs. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

``Harold has been a valuable member of my leadership team,'' USF President Judy Genshaft said in a statement. ``Through his efforts, USF has come a long way toward making the campus more vibrant and attractive to the highest quality students and making diversity an integral part of campus life.''

Nixon's post will be filled temporarily by Kofi Glover, interim assistant vice president for academic affairs. The school will conduct a national search for Nixon's permanent replacement, it said.

Nixon said he accomplished what he hoped to do when he came to USF, which was to improve the quality of students coming to USF and oversee a boom in construction of on- campus housing.

``You don't ever finish the work,'' he said. ``There's always something else to do, but I think we're at a good level.''

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
