RUTGERS' FRAZIER, SETON HALL'S MERKLINGER EARN BIG EAST BASEBALL WEEKLY HONORS

Frazier Collects 12 RBI In Three-Game Series Against Connecticut To Move RU Into First Place In Conference Play

Todd Frazier

April 9, 2007

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rutgers junior shortstop Todd Frazier earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after guiding the Scarlet Knights to a three-game sweep over Connecticut this past weekend. RU's three-game sweep over the Huskies propelled Rutgers into sole possession of first place in conference play. Seton Hall junior lefty Dan Merklinger was named Pitcher of the Week based on his performance in a 6-0 win over Georgetown on April 7.

Frazier, who was named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, captured his first weekly honor of the 2007 season following an impressive week in which he batted .400 with 13 RBI. Against conference rival Connecticut, the Toms River, N.J. native was at his best as he hit .429 with 12 RBI and three home runs in three games. In the first two games of the series, Frazier hit two grand slams. Frazier's third round-tripper of the series was a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth on April 7 which gave the Scarlet Knights a 12-10 win and erased a 9-1 seventh-inning deficit.

Merklinger earned his first conference honor of the year after he pitched eight shutout innings and struck out 10 in a 6-0 win over Georgetown. In the win, Merklinger went into the top of the ninth inning with a no-hitter. In addition, the West Orange, N.J. native allowed just one hit and walked only four to capture his third win of the season.

And he wanted to change to his old at-bat music back before this homestand... good thing we lost the previous CD!

Nice job BD.  I'm sure he'll tag some poor, innocent base runner heading down to first and nearly break his clavicle to celebrate.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
