Running back Ricky Ponton used his athleticism to score during goal-line situations. Ponton originally was stuffed on a play designed to go up the middle before bouncing it to the outside and outrunning the pursuing defenders.

Heralded freshman Mike Ford also scored on a short run.

USF coach Jim Leavitt was impressed with the play of the running backs.

"I think Aston Samuels, Ricky Ponton, Ben Williams and Mike Ford all have done some real good things," Leavitt said.

Leavitt also said he was pleased with the play of the offensive line, wide receiver Colby Erskin and linebackers Chris Robinson and Tyrone McKenzie, a Riverview High product who transferred from Iowa State.
