USF to only accept applicants with 'A' average

Yea...not quite sure if I would get in these days...most likely, I applied in 2001...boy, things have changed SO MUCH since then!  I remember how excited(jumping up and down) I was when I recieved my letter from USF.  I had a USF hat(think I bought it at a USF music festival in '99) while in High School and I was so proud to wear it on graduation day.  Good Times!!!

Fortunately I was a transfer from Auburn. I wouldnt be able to get in as a Freshman!!!  Of course, I didnt have a padded GPA either, even though I took AP classes. I think thats the case for many of us, so you really cant just go by GPA alone.

honors/AP/IB classes are given +0.5-1.0 more. So an 'A' which is typically a 4.0 is given a 4.5 or 5.0.

*note all Florida Universities recognize honors/AP/IB as a full 1.0 point; UF only gives 0.5 points for honors/AP and a full point for IB*

Actually, GPA's can get pretty hilarious. I was an IB grad with mostly A's; I think in the end I had a 5.94 GPA. I think our Valedictorian had like a 6.1 or something close to that. UF gets the lion's share of IB students in Florida, usually about half of every IB class ends up there. I got a full ride and then some from UF but hated the campus; after visiting it was easy to tell that students are treated no better than as though they were just social security numbers in most cases. I got into a few Ivys too but USF gave the most money, the best research opportunities, and frankly had the nicest folks working there. This coming from a kid who was raised a Gator fan b/c my dad (and most of my family) graduated from UF. But I consider myself the priveleged one for getting the best experience at USF... now two cousins and my younger brother go to USF. My kids will too... not because they'll be forced... but because they'll be raised to bleed Green and Gold!

FL high school ap and honors system makes getting over a 4.0 pretty easy.  USF took notice, and a lot of other schools will too.

Far too many people get into college these days.  Some of them can't even write a paper without making such flagrant errors as non-sentences.  The amount of people who get in and manage to graduate from college has watered down most bachelor's degrees significantly.  Some majors have been impacted by this less, but it's a trend I've not enjoyed witnessing.

I think USF is taking a step in the right direction, and don't be surprised to see other schools following this trend.

Didn't we also reach a point where we don't want to grow much more in total enrollment?  I thought I remembered reading that.  That would change the number of people admitted which would increase the average GPA/SAT.

I was in IB too and I agree that GPAs are ridiculous.  The competition for valedictorian can come down to who took all AP classes for electives.  It does show that someone took harder classes and most of the time the unweighted GPA is listed as well to show what the actual GPA was.  Seems like you could just tally AP/IB classes and list those along with a 4.0 scale GPA, but whatever.

Thats why many schools systems like dade county are getting rid of the val/sal and going into using Summa,magna etc.
