USF to only accept applicants with 'A' average

The days when "mostly A's and B's" were good enough to get students into the Florida public university of their choice appear to be gone.

For the first time this fall, the University of South Florida's incoming freshman class will have an "A" average.

At USF's Tampa campus, competition to get in is intense and growing. About 23,000 students applied for admission as freshmen this year, an 11 percent increase over last year. Only about 10,000 freshmen will be accepted.

Enrollment planning Vice-President Leellen Brigman said the school has become more selective about the students it admits, so higher GPAs and SAT scores are needed to get in.

Community college is one alternative for students who don't get into a four-year state school. Florida has a guaranteed admission program, meaning if a student gets an Associate of Arts degree from a community college they are guaranteed admission to a four-year state school.

Admission standards are even higher at the University of Florida than at USF. The middle 50 percent of the incoming freshmen class will have a GPA of between 3.9 and 4.4.

Funny... the story about Florida's "Fluite effect" from their national championship said they had 25,000 ... USF had 23,000... gotta love that!!

Go Bulls!!

I would.  Heck, I was accepted to UF, but chose USF instead.  Heck, I was accepted to UF for grad school, and turned them down again.  I'm just too smart to be a Gay-tor... ;)

are the kids smarter or is the system rigged to boost gpa's?

Both.  Population increases mean there are more kids than seats available, which increases application numbers, which makes colleges able to be more selective.  At the same time, there are "AP" classes with higher weighted grade points, allowing kids to pad their GPA a bit.

The GPAs are 'rigged' in that high school students get extra GPA points for being in honors classes, other advanced classes or IB classes.

However, Admissions converts all of the 'inflated' GPAs to a 4.0 scale.

Expect the GPA and SAT/ACT score requirements to get even tougher in the next few years.
