Bulls down 5-0 after four innings.  It looks like Yuri Higgins is getting roughed up today.

Bulls get the first two on base, but the next three can't advance them.   Only 2 hits through five innings.  Need the bats to wake up today.

Diaz Extends Hitting Streak To 13 Games In USF's 6-2 Loss to UConn

STORRS, Conn. (April 1, 2007) – University of South Florida (22-9) junior shortstop Walter Diaz had one hit Sunday afternoon at Connecticut (11-12), extending his hitting streak to 13 games in the Bulls' 6-2 loss to the Huskies at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs.

Diaz is 23-for-50 (.460) in the past 13 games with 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. He has registered three doubles and a home run while drawing 16 walks, one of which was intentional. Diaz has also stolen six bases and made 14 put outs.

In Sunday's game, UConn took its first lead of the three-game series, scoring one run in the first inning, which was scored on a bases-loaded walk.

The Huskies added four more in the fourth, taking the 5-0 lead in the third game of the BIG EAST series.

USF finally crossed the plate in the sixth, scoring two runs from two hits.

Junior Josh LeRoy drew a walk to start the inning, then sophomore Addison Maruszak singled to the right side before freshman Ryan Soares walked to load the bases for junior Charles Cleveland. Cleveland sent a base hit to center field, which scored LeRoy. Senior pinch hitter Ty Taborelli then reached on a fielder's choice and picked up his 19th RBI of the season by scoring Maruszak.

UConn added another run in the sixth before freshman right hander Shawn Sanford came in for pitching relief. Sanford allowed no runs and no hits in 2.1 innings for USF.

In his third start of the season, senior right handed pitcher Yuri Higgins threw two strikeouts while allowing eight hits and six runs in 5.2 innings.

Maruszak was 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored while Diaz, Cleveland and junior Brad Karns each had a hit.

The Bulls return to Red McEwen this week for a five-game homestand with three separate teams. On Tuesday, April 3 UCF comes to Tampa for a 6 p.m. game, then West Virginia will play a three-game conference set with USF April 5-7. The Bulls will host Stetson April 10 at 6 p.m. for the third game of the in-state series.

Only 5 hits for the Bulls today.  Just like Lelo has said, sometimes the team doesn't play with enthusiasm consistently.  This seems to be the case for today's ballgame.  At least we got 2 out of 3, so now we are 6-3 in conference.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
