Where does it say Pelphrey withdrew from consideration? The only thing I can find on CBS Sportsline is the article that says he’s a “backup candidate of sorts” and “unsure if he’d accept the job”, here: http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10080395

Gary, you are absolutely correct. I misread the CBSSportsline.com reference. I guess this was a bad week to give up amphetamines. I still believe what I was told and think he’s not interested in the USF job.

What drama...now we think he's not interested...I hope this type of press (like the EKU comments) aren't detrimental to outsiders' views of the program - there seems to be little concrete fact behind them.   I posted the same Sportsline.com excerpt here and had a completely different opinon on what it meant.

If he did turn it down it might be 'cuz he wasn't going to be offered and was trying to save face.

^^^ Like I said yesterday, I'm not sure he was trying to save face just because he did the same thing last year when he was the leader for Ole Miss and UAB.

Someone on the radio here (Cincy) said today that he wants to stay because he returns all 5 starters to USA. They don't think he'll get offered the UK job, and they don't think he's limiting himself to just it.

He hasn't declined any jobs yet, and USF and Marshall have shown interest. They don't believe he's interested in either, simply because he likes the team he returns next year. Marshall has turned to UF assistants Donnie Jones and Larry Shyatt, with Jones expected to take the job.

They do believe that if Calipari goes to UK, he (Pelphrey) could be one of the candiates because of his familarity with the gulf states/tennessee recruiting region.

Gregg Marshall's rumored numbers are closer to 650k at USF, NOT the 800k reported yesterday.

For the Iowa job they mentioned the usual names. Grant, Lowery, Lon Kruger, and Lickliter. They don't expect Kruger to take the Iowa job, simply because they believe he will be the top candidate for Michigan.

Sean Miller sand Xavier agreed to an extension through 2015, so he's off the market.

Finally, Pete Gillen is really not as interested in the USF job as once believed. It's being said that he interviewed out of respect for Dickie V who publicly lobbied for the job.

Umm, yeah. It's nice to know he is the hometown reporter for the newpaper of the City I live in.

Joe, were did you get this imformation. If it's reliable, I thank you. It seems the same people are posting 40 different thread on a coach and they all have different information. Too bad I can't read my local newpaper and get the info I need.

Good thing the coaching change isn't as important to me as it to BasketBull.

You'll need to read this thread

A lot of the info Joe had may be reliable, but the guy reporting it there does not seem to be so.

It's comical how people think USF is this "awful" job.  Its the Big East, its in Florida, its one of ten biggest schools in the country.  You get a shot at Boehiem, Calhoun, Pitino, John Thompson..

You are coaching in the premier basketball conference.

give me a break..

I never Liked this guy anyways..

Somebody is going to win at USF...  Just like someone was eventually going to win at Rutgers in football.  And when they do win -- they are going to be national big time..

Pelphrey out of USF mix

Posted By Brett McMurphy at Mar 22, 2007 at 03:36 PM

Word leaked Wednesday that South Alabama’s John Pelphrey was no longer interested in pursuing the University of South Florida job. After The Tampa Tribune reported Thursday that Pelphrey did not receive a job offer, CBSSportsline.com confirmed Pelphrey was no longer interested in the USF job.

And that was before the Kentucky job opened Thursday afternoon when Tubby Smith bolted for Minnesota.

With Pelphrey out of the USF mix, the only candidates that have interviewed are Winthrop’s Gregg Marshall, the clear front-runner, and former Virginia coach Pete Gillen.

On Thursday, Pelphrey confirmed what the Tampa Tribune reported Monday, about a meeting with USF AD Doug Woolard Saturday in Atlanta. Through the school’s sports information office, Pelphrey said: “I have met informally with South Florida about their opening,†Pelphrey said. “That’s where we stand right now.â€Â

A former University of Kentucky standout, Pelphrey obviously will go all out for the UK job. Another USF target and former UK star - UMass’ Travis Ford - canceled a visit to Tampa on Monday and indicated he wasn’t interested in the USF job. He also will have a great deal of interest in UK - as will 20 percent of all the Division I coaches.

it is a better job than oregon and a few others i can think of
