USF Volleyball Adds Defensive Specialist

TAMPA, Fla. (March 22, 2007) – University of South Florida head volleyball coach Claire Lessinger announced today that Rachel Matos will join the volleyball program in the 2007-08 academic year.

"Rachel is a spark plug,†Lessinger said. “I was immediately impressed with her quickness, fearlessness and passion. She plays with confidence and she is exploding with court personality. I am looking forward to developing Rachel at the next level. She has the potential to be a defensive dynamo in our league."

Matos, a defensive specialist, hails from Miami, Fla. At Felix Varela High School, she recorded 40 aces and collected 340 digs for an average of 3.47 a game. In her senior season, she helped lead her team to one of its most successful seasons to date, winning the Greater Miami Athletic Conference title in 2006 and earning a No. 8-ranking in the Class 6A Poll. For her efforts, she was named First Team All-Dade by the Miami Herald and earned All-State Honorable Mention by the Florida Sports Writers Association.

Also excelling off the court, Matos was a scholar athlete honoree and is a member of the honor society.

Matos is the fourth player to join the Bulls for the 2007 campaign. Erin Kracl, Allie Boaz and Mariana Thon committed during the early signing period.
