cant judge the coach by that.  if he got into the big east it would open him up to a whole new area of recruits.

college basketball is more about recruiting then it is X's and O's

True, but some of those results do scare me.

I don't know. After I slept on it, I'm a little scared and I'm 50/50; I would be okay if he accepts the offer or doesn't.

The Big South is softer than melted ice cream:

Big South Conf: High Point, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, N.C. Asheville,  Virginia Military,  Radford, Charleston S.

Here's a link to Winthrop's historical schedule: Winthrop

These are the only things we know:

1) He turned the same talent into a winner in a year: 98' (14-14 )(7-7) --> 99' (21-8) (15-1)

2) They think enough of him to offer him 400K for 10 years... That's crazy money for a school like that. Don't forget the Lobos wanted him at one point.

3) There is no recuiting big talent to Winthrop. He had to make do with 1-star and 2-star players and some 3-star jucos. And with that talent, his squad has hung with and sometimes beat some of the big boys.

4) Consistency: he had won quite a bit while at ice-cream world...

5) Winthrop on the Final AP Poll: #22

FINAL AP Men's Top-25 Poll

Here's the thing.  He's dominated the Big South with Big South talent.

How many wins did CJL have over good 1-A football teams before we made the jump to 1-A?  How many wins did he have over good BCS teams before we made the jump to a BCS conference.

No coach is a sure thing.  I would rather have a young, energetic, experienced, winning head coach than a re-tread.

Let's face it, we are not going to get a top-notch coach with head coaching experience in one of the six power conferences.  It's going to be either a mid-major head coach or a power conference assistant.

Interesting. I think it shows improvement.

Has he been getting a lot of transfers the past few years? Anyone know?

The AD is looking at it from a cost factor I believe, we don't have the budget for anyone bigtime so get this guy who in the small league has garnered success and see if he can translate that success into success in the Big East.  I agree it is about recruiting.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
