K-State assistant not getting D-I attention

How Kansas State assistant basketball coach Frank Martin isn't a viable candidate for the opening at South Florida is unfathomable.

Pete Gillen, the former Virginia coach who is currently out of work, has interviewed. So has South Alabama's John Pelphrey.

Massachusetts coach Travis Ford canceled his trip to Tampa this week.

Other names reportedly linked to the job include Memphis assistant Derek Kellogg, former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and former St. John's coach Mike Jarvis.

But not Martin, who hasn't been contacted by anyone at South Florida; USF athletic director Doug Woolard did not return phone calls Tuesday.

Martin was born in Miami, where he also coached high school basketball for 15 years, winning several state championships. He recruits the state as well as anyone -- as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern from 2000-04, the Huskies' roster was routinely filled with players from Florida.

Even now, there are two upperclassmen from Miami still on Northeastern's roster.

Problem is, he hasn't been a head coach, which is supposedly what the USF administration is seeking.

Whether the school will be able to land a coach with the type of experience it is seeking remains to be seen. Understand, this isn't the most attractive position. There isn't a history of success, but the school does desire a winner.

While there are plans for a practice facility, there is no timetable.

It's a Big East job, but it's a low-paying Big East job. Ousted USF coach Robert McCullum earned a total salary package of $310,000 last season, including a base salary of $225,000 -- which is basically what Ron Prince's coordinators are being paid.

The bottom line is, it will take a special person with a different level of enthusiasm to make this work.

It might be too much work for a coach with little tread left on the tire, like Gillen. And it might be only a lateral move for Pelphrey or Ford.

But it would mean everything to Martin, who isn't unhappy in Manhattan but would relish the opportunity to return close to home and transform a floundering program into a winner.

I just wouldn't feel comfortable hiring a guy with no head coaching experience in college basketball. I think Doug Woolard feels the same way

That writer is a fool.

A lateral for Pelphrey or Ford?

First I have heard of Kellogg

The writer is really pushing Martin, wonder why?  Why do journalists, beat writers and/or reporters get involved in the push?

I didn't want Huggins, and I certainly don't want his assistant.  Next.

Doug Woolard will find the best candidate available.

Not matter who he hires in Doug I trust.

He knows USF athletics better then anybody.

Lets just step aside and let Mr. Woolard do his job.

In Doug I trust.
