Just hire the guy.  He wants the job really bad.  He has a huge chip on his shoulder over what happened at UVA.  He won a ton of basketball games at xavier and providence.

I think he is the right fit.

Hiring the guy from South Alabama makes me want to go in the garage, lock the door and turn the car on.

Gillien seems like a good name with a good coaching background and he is very hungry to prove the naysayers wrong.

Bobby Lutz doesn't look like he is coming to Fowler....  so I will take the next best thing I guess.

Anything but the guy from South Alabama.  He doesn't even seem like he wants the job.

Gillien's upfrontness about wanting to come here makes him my first pick now.

Hire him.

I think Gillen would be okay but I much prefer Grant, Lowery, Marshall, or Hobbs. Come on DW hire one of those guys!

Gregg Marshall of Winthrop looks to be the leading guy at New Mexico now rumored offer of 700-750.  (they have also talked to Steve Alford)

The problem with those four names is that they are all "key" candidates that will be getting nice salaries next year. Do you really want USF to spend 700-800k on a coach and not be able to increase spending elsewhere? I'm not sure how much money is really floating around right now.

As I've sat back and thought it through, a younger, less hot/in demand coach might be better for a few reasons:

1) This program is going to take time regardless of what happens, to get to a top level

2) We're not paying for a name or hot coach, that if it doesn't work out, we'll be stuck paying a lot of money to.

3) They can work out just as well.

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Spending decent money on a good coach may not be a bad idea at all.

I tend to agree, the only argument to the contrary would be the media spotlight that a "name" coach would bring. On the other hand, how much of a media spotlight can you expect to bring to college basketball in Tampa, Florida? To me it doesn't make a lot of sense to take a large chunk of limited resources, and give it to a coach who may or may not pan out.

It just seems like Gillien wants the job and he has the experience that every other coach since Lee Rose hasn't had.

He is as good of a name that has been mentioned.

He knows what its like to go to the elite 8 and surely knows what its like to win a lot of games.

We might as well just give him the chance that he wants so bad.

We have gransberry and if you can't win with a guy getting 22 points and 13 rebounds then nobody can win at South FLorida

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
