Forgive me for this rant, but I just went off on them and I feel the need to share.  That being said...

I swear, this paper is the biggest load of horse **** that's ever seen the light of publication.  EVERY SINGLE WEEK there's a grossly offensive or incorrect error in this pile of vomit that passes as a paper.  More often than not, there are subtle shots at USF as well.  This particular article went beyond the boundaries of bad journalism into flat-out ****.

This article:  http://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/lifestyle/orl-defib07mar20,0,1573099.story?coll=orl-home-lifestyle

Makes the following statements:

"For 19-year-old Keely Dorsey of Tampa, a University of South Florida running back, it struck after his team's workout."

"The automated external defibrillator -- or AED, as it's often known -- might well have saved Cheyanne or Keely or Alexander, too, though no one can say with certainty."

Basically, the INFERENCE of these comments is that USF was too cheap to outfit the athletic center with AEDs and, as a result, Keeley died.  It may have saved him, but "no one can say with certainty."

I can, A**hole.

I just blasted off a letter to the editorial staff.  It's not the first one I've had to write to them... I've caught them plagiarizing content from Wikipedia, as well as just flat out making stuff up.

It's already done and sent, but I thought I'd share the letter with you so that you can see the type of subtle crap and flat out malicious lies that this piece of crap paper puts out.

******************************************

To Whom it May Concern:

While I indeed appreciate the intent and importance behind Ms. Santich's recent article on the effectiveness of portable defibrillators, I must take this opportunity to chide the Orlando Sentinel and its editorial staff for yet another instance in which the proper research was not completed before going to press with an article.

Ms. Santich sets up her article using the following claims (I'm including the content in question):

"For 19-year-old Keely Dorsey of Tampa, a University of South Florida running back, it struck after his team's workout."

"The automated external defibrillator -- or AED, as it's often known -- might well have saved Cheyanne or Keely or Alexander, too, though no one can say with certainty."

The inference of Ms. Santich's article is this:  If USF had spent the money to equip the facility with defibrillators, Keeley Dorsey may still be alive. This suggestion is grossly offensive and incendiary.

Had Ms. Santich (or anyone else at the Sentinel for that matter) done a simple Google search, they would have discovered that the USF Athletic Facility, a state of the art facility in every sense of the term, includes not one but SIX portable defibrillators in the area where Mr. Dorsey collapsed after his workout.  Mr. Dorsey was immediately attended to by medical staff with one of those defibrillators with no success.  Not only are there a half-dozen defibrillators on hand in the event of an emergency, but all USF trainers are licensed in both CPR and emergency defibrillator use, and both medical techniques were used without success when Mr. Dorsey collapsed.

Reference:  (http://www.sptimes.com/2007/01/19/Sports/Bulls_hold_off_on_ban.shtml)

As a proud graduate of the University of South Florida, I'm offended by this omission in facts.  While we all can agree that the passing of any student under any circumstances is terrible occurrence, a seemingly innocuous comment such as this not only calls into question my university's commitment to the health and welfare of student athletes, but to the overall commitment of the health of the entire student body.  A simple walk around any campus building will reveal numerous defibrillators on hand, in the event of an emergency such as the ones detailed by Ms. Santich and, unfortunately, experienced by USF recently with the passing of Mr. Dorsey.

Rest assured, the University of South Florida is on the leading edge when it comes to securing the health and welfare of those that live, work, and play on its campus.  I strongly suggest that the editorial staff of the Orlando Sentinel make a similar commitment to excellence.

Sincerely,

Me

They're just such... such... ASSCLOWNS at that place.  I mean, in all seriousness, they must never ever ever use Google or Lexis/Nexis to check a single fact.  Their journalistic standards are so incredibly poor, it's painful to read.

The old comment "A trained monkey could do better" was never more applicable.  I don't claim to be a journalist, but hell... I'd at least use Google before incorrectly inferring that a university's cheapness was responsible for the death of an athlete.

Well written.  I just can’t believe that they just didn't check their facts.  For crying out loud if I did something like that I certainly would lose my job.  I hope some sort of reprimand will take place to this journalist

I rather doubt it will happen.  And you know the old story about retractions (always on page 6 in the corner) they aren't as interesting or well-intentioned as rag bag crap!!!!!

Pretty stupid by the Sentinel.  High schools even have these portable  defibrillators nowadays.
