Where are all the people now that said there was NO WAY they were hiring Grant from VCU? Not saying that will get him, but sounds like he's in the Top 3 choices.

these are same people that said rmc wouldnt get fired

they disappear from time to time

Who said CRM wouldn't get fired?  Some thought because of economics that it was a long shot and thought he wouldn't get fired.  I didn't see anyone write, with any certainty, that CRM would definately be back next year.

That's just wrong and dorky counselor.

It was Brett McMurphy that said we weren't hiring him because Grant is not interested in USF.  This was repeated today in The Mobile Register as well.

If you were paying any attention at all and not simply try to sow discord on the board, you would see that many people have interest in Grant, including possibly those that said "RMC wouldn't get fired", not even sure who said that.  I think you may mean those that said he "shouldn't" be fired.  But I'll leave that interpreting to the specialists.   We know Brett said McCullum would get fired and he is the source of the Grant denials of interest.  So, as for your contention...wrong again sir.

As I reminded smazza in the post, jfc, the story that Grant was not interested in USF came from Brett.  I urged others to take that with a grain of salt, because we have heard nothing from Grant himself.  I don't believe people on the board had anything to go on besides Brett's piece.  So if you're looking for an explanation for the NO WAY, go read Brett's blog.

No one on the board has talked to Grant as far as I know.

USFMike

I should have known you were keeping a scorecard at home.   ;)

Yeah, so the one guy we know that boasted strongly MAC would be BACK is not here to comment now.  That explains smazza's shot - it was intended specifically for USFMikeB (smazza's arch-enemy and nemesis) and generally for everyone else.  Or, perhaps, he mistakenly used his lawyer-ease to turn USFMikeB into "same people".

But then USFMikeB hasn't been back to make a comment on Grant, so smazza's logic (oxymoron) is still off.  Why do I even try to understand what he is saying or attempt to validate it...skip..

Not taking anything personally.

Just seems to me he's the logical choice IF he's at all interested.

1. USF larger school.

2. Big East conference.

3. He's from Florida.

But, the whole thing about it is I don't know the money situation. Throw out $200,000 more than he's making at VCU, promise some other incentives if he turns things around and I'm thinking he's USF's new coach. But, not sure if that can happen? Maybe someone else does, or it's been talked about already?

However, if it could be done and USF starts making it to the NCAA fairly consistently, $200,000 is a drop in the bucket compared to the return of a winning program.

Being that I live here in Mobile and here about USA all the time here on local sports radio; I believe I'm know more about Pelphrey than any of you do so here it is.

The guy is a GREAT coach.  The things he's been able to do with the talent at South has been remarkable.  His schemes work well and he knows how to get the most out of players.  He's going to be a great coach at a large program one day, but right now he may not be the perfect fit for USF.

The only thing that can get USF into a position to play with the big boys in this conference is a BIG NAME who can walk in and recruite with anyone.  No doubt in my mind that if Pelphrey was hired by an already established program he could keep it going for years.  But build a program?  I have my doubts.

How many recruits will know his name?  Whose going to care about his past at SOUTH ALABAMA?  He's got a great pedigree, but recruits don't sign up for pedigrees.  They want to go where they can play in the big dance and South only gets there bc their conference is TERRIBLE.

USF basketball is in a coma.  They don't need a good doctor who excels at treating a living person; they need someone to bring that person out of a coma which means they need a SHOCKER.

It would be a step up for Pelphrey if we hired him and a step up for us as well; but not a big enough step up to where we could compete with the best recruits next year.  It's going to take years for someone like Pelphrey to build a program.  Can he build it?  Yeah, he's good.  But you better not be hoping for an overnight miracle like Texas Tech got when it brought in Knight.

$200,000 may be a drop in the bucket compared to a winning program's revenue increase, but as we've seen, even if we did sell out the sun dome every game, the revenue increase could only be so high as we already sell out all the expensive lower seats and part of the upper now, even if those people don't show up.

Now throw in that we are paying Mac 400k as a buyout, and all of a sudden 200k is now 600k for the first year.

And then buying a coach like Grant isn't going to guarantee a winning program.  It could happen, but this is still the toughest league to move out of the bottom in.

It is just more complicated than the drop in the bucket comparison.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
