Coaching searches: Schools narrowing choices

March 18, 2007

By Gregg Doyel

CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Two coaching jobs in the South are close to being filled, with sources telling CBS SportsLine.com that South Florida is taking a hard look at South Alabama's John Pelphrey and Georgia State is considering an offer to former Ole Miss coach Rod Barnes.

Other candidates on the USF radar are VCU's Anthony Grant and Florida assistant Larry Shyatt. Georgia State also is looking at former Auburn coach Cliff Ellis and former Colorado coach Ricardo Patton.

At Utah, a long-shot candidate -- but one who has the support of Jon Huntsman, for whom the Utes' arena is named -- is NAIA Westminster coach Tommy Connor. He played point guard for Rick Majerus in the late 1980s.

At Liberty, two serious candidates are South Carolina assistant Rick Duckett and former New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay.

Northern Illinois is looking at former Wisconsin-Stevens Point coach Jack Bennett, who won two Division III national titles there before retiring in 2005. Bennett is the brother of former Wisconsin coach **** Bennett and the uncle of Washington State's Tony Bennett.

Thought you said he'd be another McCullum? You edited those remarks.

What does "hard look" mean, when in the next paragraph they mention two other candidates. "Hard look" could mean he was the first one interviewed or the first one Woolard was spotted with, etc.
