It's gonna take more than a salary, he's gonna want facility upgrades, recruiting budget increases, etc.

BINGO! I just don't think we can offer all of that to him in the manner he would want. I hope I am wrong though.

The guy has one good year and he is the savior.

Talk about quick fix syndrome.

He didn't even recruit any of those players.

the rhetoric on this board is absurd.

Do we know for certain that he would love to take the Miami job?

Sure, he spent a few years there as a teenager, but he doesn't have any tangible link to UM.

If we're only talking geography here, USF isn't exactly all that far away from the city of Miami.

Dear Rich Booster Guys...

Please break out the check books and donate what we need to throw an "eye-popping" salary at Coach Grant.

I'll be your best friend if you do.

Thanks.

Agreed and props to MAB for wanting this guy a while back before they even made the Tourney.

I think the USF job is pretty good if the money is put up to improve- they can only go up and the media markets they play in are sick. At the Rutgers game in 2005 Woolard gave a speech about the media and population of the cities where the Big East plays and it was pretty impressive. I bring this up because that is how coaches become big names and garner big money. Not everyone who donates tons of money to their school follows bball as much as some on this board.

Yes but he does have a very good class coming in by CAA standards. He's taken a program that Jason Capel made solid into very good. (28-6; compared to 19-10 last year)

He's a good coach Ari.

What is absurd is how you speak of a situation about which you appear to know very little so definitively.

Like I've posted here before, I live 10 minutes from the VCU campus, and have followed them VERY closely this season.

First of all...yes, he did recruit a couple of the players on the roster now.  Two freshmen come to mind.

Secondly, what you also fail to realize is that Grant has taken a team that has one very good player (Eric Maynor) and two or three other decent players (Jesse Pelot-Rosa, B.A. Walker) and has made them a VERY GOOD team.  This was a team that everyone picked to finish 6th in the CAA this season!!  So everyone was and still is aware that their overall talent level is far from stellar.

So what does Grant do?  Wins the regular season CAA title, wins the CAA tournament, and wins the first round game against some school named Duke.

People (in Richmond) are starting to realize losing Capel to Oklahoma may have been the best thing to happen to VCU basketball.

How's that for absurd, JoeBulls?

He also has the "Cool" factor and lots of swagger.  I know bulliever will jump on me for this but like Jim Leyland said it is the most underrated aspect of a coach and a player.  The way he carries himself and an inviting smile goes miles in recruiting young kids.

Just by looking at Grant you can tell if he came in your living room to recruit you, you may not listen to another coach.  his own players said it took one day for them to realize he was the right coach for them.  They thought they had it good with Capel now they know they have it great with Grant.

But joebulls maybe we should go after your self proclaimed guy bitter beer face bobby Lutz, yea he has a lot of appeal to young inner city youth im sure.

I would throw the house at Grant, whatever you want, if we can afford we will do it, if not then we have to look elsewhere.  We will see.  I just dont know if i should root for or against VCU in the tourney for our chances of getting him.  I know I want to root for them.

Come on...I'm a Pirates fan since 1970.  Leyland said that?  Mr. Dry?  That's funny coming from him.

He said he likes his players to be arrogant and have lots of swagger.  thats why he liked Barry bonds so much and now Gary Sheffield.   As a Mets fan, thank you for bobby Bonilla.

They said the same thing about Jon Gruden and the bucs.  Grant had one good year -- but I was born and raised in Virginia -- my sister lives in Richmond -- i have known about VCU since I was 7 or 8.

Jeff Capel is the guy that turned that program around.  I don't care how many times you don't want to admit it, but its the truth.

Grant has proved he is a good coach with talent.  He is yet to fully mold that program.

I think it is a bit of a risk -- why not go with a guy who has proven over an 8 year period that he wins.

You act like I don't know anything about VCU or Richmond.

I grew up playing tennis at Byrd Park off monument avenue and my sister had an apartment off broad street for a decade.

I know all about Virginia Commonwealth.

Don't tell me that Anthony Grant is the reason that team is SO good.

They were dog-crap before Capel got there.

60 minutes did a story on Jeff Capel and the VCU program a few years ago.

I am sure you missed it.

And I am not saying that Grant isn't a great prospect -- but he is not the second coming.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
