Gillen's Stock Rising?

I am going to close the garage door and start up the car in 5 minutes.....

PETE GILLIEN?????

The guy went to ONE ncaa tourny from 1998-2005 at UVA!

Am I missing something here?

So lets hire the guy from UVA who got fired because he took the cavaliers to one NCAA tourny in 8 years over the guy from Charlotte who has been to 5 NCAA's in 9 years and the post-season 8 of the 9 years he coached there.

Fly me to the moon..

Has USF lost its mine?

Let's see.... Charlotte is in the A-10/C-USA... UVa is in the ACC?  That means at least 5-6 more wins for Charotte than UVa virtually automatically.  Not necessarily fair to compare the schools.

Criteria #2 you have been to a minimum of two NCAA tournys at your previous job

Looks like he's taken two different teams there...

Hopefully not ..... They're going to need it to bankroll the next coach.

Yeah.....and when did USF ever have a mine anyhow?  We'd probably have an on-campus football stadium by now if we had a mine.

He did a wonderful job at UVA

8 years -- one NCAA appearance and on NIT appearance - then he got fired.

I think Jerry Ann Winters would be a better fit.

He was at four NITs at UVA.  Nice try falsifying the resume.

Virginia Hoops Coach Says He's Been Fired

March 14, 2005 4:47 PM

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia fired basketball coach Pete Gillen on Monday, he told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

In a brief phone interview with the newspaper, Gillen confirmed reports that he was let go after seven years at the school.

"We're just putting that paperwork together," said Gillen, who has six years remaining on a 10-year, $9 million contract he signed after the 2000-01 season.

The school said athletic director Craig Littlepage would address the media at 5 p.m.

Gillen said he's not sure if he'll coach in 2005-06.

"I'm going to take some time off," he said. "I love coaching, but my health isn't great right now. I'm a little beat up."

Phone messages left by The Associated Press at Littlepage's and Gillen's offices were not immediately returned.

The Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA tournament just once under Gillen, in 2000-01. That season and his success with an undermanned team his first two years prompted the long-term deal.

But Gillen's future at Virginia has been tenuous for the past two seasons as the Cavaliers faltered in Atlantic Coast Conference play. This season they finished 14-15 overall and 4-12 in the expanded ACC, becoming the first team to be seeded 11th in the conference tournament.

After beating sixth-seeded Miami 66-65 in the first round, the Cavaliers lost 76-64 to eventual champion Duke in the quarterfinals.

Littlepage repeatedly said expectations for this season were high and that a $130 million, 15,000-seat arena due to open in 2006 mandated a turnaround in the men's program.

Gillen's arrival in Charlottesville seemed a logical next step after he made his mark at Xavier and then Providence, leading his teams to eight NCAA tournaments and three NITs in 13 years. He had a career record of 274-128.

At Virginia, however, his record was just 118-93. The Cavaliers made four trips to the NIT, never getting past the second round, and were just 2-7 in the ACC tournament.

Littlepage is expected to take some time before hiring a new coach. He's required to attend the NCAA tournament as a member of the selection committee, and is expected to pursue a big name as the next coach to spark a surge in donations for the John Paul Jones Arena.

Among the names prominently mentioned are Texas coach Rick Barnes, who once agreed to leave Providence for the Virginia job but later changed his mind, Kentucky's Tubby Smith and Mike Brey of Notre Dame.

I don't want someone's unsuccessful experiment. Thank you, come again...

Hmmm, if we go after him, we're competing against Evansville. Is that a high school?

No thanks....Next.

Evansville has been to more NCAAs than USF has in the last 20 years.  They have more clout than us in reality.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
