Gillen's stock rising

The dismissal of South Florida coach Robert McCullum during the ACC Tournament gave rise to speculation that former Virginia coach Pete Gillen, 59, might be a good fit. Gillen also has been mentioned in connection with an opening at Evansville.

"If I were in charge, the first guy I'd ask until he said no is Peter Gillen," ESPN analyst **** Vitale told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. "Seton Hall went after him, [but] couldn't get him. He has a wealth of Big East experience, the job he did at Providence [and] ACC experience at Virginia.

"He has personality plus. The media would love him, the fans, alumni. He's exactly the resume they should be looking for. ... The guy's like me. I'm 67 and I'll match my energy with any 12-year-old."

I forgot he was at Providence.  Vitale has always been on the Pete Gillen bandwagon.  Notice he never calls him Pete.  Its always Peter.

I am going to close the garage door and start up the car in 5 minutes.....

PETE GILLIEN?????

The guy went to ONE ncaa tourny from 1998-2005 at UVA!

Am I missing something here?

So lets hire the guy from UVA who got fired because he took the cavaliers to one NCAA tourny in 8 years over the guy from Charlotte who has been to 5 NCAA's in 9 years and the post-season 8 of the 9 years he coached there.

Fly me to the moon..

Has USF lost its mine?

What does Dickie V's opinion have to do with USF losing its mind?

Please don't hire this guy.

How about criteria #1 is that you haven't been fired before

Criteria #2 you have been to a minimum of two NCAA tournys at your previous job

Three things I recall about Peter Gillen.

1.  He has a giant head

2.  Nobody sweats like Gillen on the sideline (Gary Williams is the exception)

3.  Underachiever at UVA

Nice intro from the New York Post:

Pete Gillen, the colorful former coach who enjoyed smashing March Madness success at Xavier (Sweet 16, 1990) and Providence (Elite 8, 1997), offers his unique NCAA Tournament perspective from his CSTV catbird's seat. As told to Steve Serby:

That does whittle down the list a bit

Has USF lost its mine?

Hopefully not ..... They're going to need it to bankroll the next coach.

To which the NewsObserver counters:

"Virginia coach Dave Leitao has taken up where Pete Gillen left off -- losing big games in March."

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
