Who are you top three and why should he be the next coach? You heard our AD, USF is now committed to men's bbal! We need to make this hire ASAP so that the new staff can get started --while the NCAA is going on, hopefully.

1) John Thompson III (Current Georgetown coach):

Yes, we TAKE him from Georgetown with a bag of money. He's making right around 400K right now... He's done nothing but win in the BE and he's only 40. He could make USF into a powerhouse. Money? 600-700K http://guhoyas.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/thompsoniii_john00.html

2) Bobby Lutz

He's ready for a change. And he will take USF to the dance in 1 or 2 years. Money? 500-600K http://www.allcoachnetwork.com/lutz/main.html

3) Anthony Grant

He's from Florida and full of energy, quite young. He'd be a gamble but worth a shot. Money? 400-500K http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Grant_%28basketball%29

You cant be serious with this can you?  Leave a team that has a good chance at the final 4 if not the national championship game for the situation here, yeah thats realistic.  I like your other choices but have you been drinking today?

Well I think you miss his angle...Thompson certainly wouldn't leave GU today.  He'd take the team into the tourney and then, afterwards, based on his current salary, USF would try to take him away.  I think what B-Bull has done is identify a bargain opportunity for a new coach.  Not that GU won't double his salary, who knows...

You want a "WOW" coach? You want to stop the bball crying every year? [Yes, of course wait till the tournament is over.  ::)] USF comes in and snaps up Thompson from that tiny school. There's a very good chance he will leave with the right offer.

John Thompson III grew up in the Georgetown gym under his dad's arm.

He has his dream job and a dream team.

Maybe the NBA could sway him, but other then that he will be at G-town for the next 20 years.

That may be true, but you never know..(I happen to think he'll stay there).  But money talks and stranger things have happened.

OK I can't take this anymore...

We're not hiring one of the best coaches in college basketball who's father built the program, who grew up as a ball boy for the team, and who's set to double his salary in DC, to come to a competing Big East school.  That's setting us up for failure when we do make a hire, and a ridiculous proposition.

Let's be clear about a few things here:

Only one person who has ever coached this program has coached another college basketball game in his career after leaving USF (Seth Greenberg).  He's a four seed this weekend, but before today was the longest-tenured coach in D-1 without an NCAA appearance, the majority of that tenure with us.  And it's not because he can't coach.

Since we moved to "major" conference basketball in 1995 (and I count the old C-USA as a major league, as constituted it certainly was), we've finished in the top half our our league twice, and never in the top third.  We have appeared in a conference tournament semifinal once (2004 in Memphis).  We've appeared in two NIT's, with one win.

We're not getting a currently winning high major coach to step into this situation.  Why would one?  The ravenous basketball fanbase we have?  The outstanding facilities?  The deep and storied tradition?  The great way this area supports college basketball (worst attendance for an ACC Tournament ever this weekend)?  The buckets of money we're able to throw at a potential coach?

I don't know what some of you are thinking here, but I would encourage you to be realistic.  The assets of great weather and the opportunity to build something without the media microscope in a major conference are for sure assets.  The patience of the fan base, by the indications of this board and the way our previous coach was treated, certainly aren't.

We will get a good coach, and I look forward to seeing who it is.  I don't mind guessing as to whom it might be, as I'm doing the same.  But to paraphrase a current Big East coach during his tenure in the NBA:  "John Wooden isn't walking through that door.  Roy Williams isn't walking through that door.  And Al Maguire isn't walking through that door."

Basketbull. Come on, JT III was born and raised around Georgetown. You don't think Georgetown, who has the Hoya Paranoia back isn't planning on giving JT III a better contract? Even if they didn't it would take a UK level job to get him to leave. I'm sorry, but to even consider him as a legit candidate is preposterous.

As for Grant, I think he'll cost around 650-750,000. While he isn't making much at VCU he'll be the hottest coaching candidate out there. Even if he doesn't take a new job this year, he'll get that type of money in the years to come. He was very patient in grabbing his 1st head coaching job. Nothing leads me to believe he won't be the same for a promotion to a higher program.

Lutz is a good possibility, we'll see on him.
