It sure would make it tough for McMurphy to cover the basketball team.

It's not already? I mean the players and coaches have to know how he wrote about them for the entire season. I have to agree with Bulliever that it would be pretty interesting to see the reaction of Brett, and the Tribune in general, if Coach McCullum comes backs for another season.

As hard as it is for many to see, the basketball team is not very good and has not been very good for a long time.

I like Brett.

I like how he challenged CJL in the spring about not being able to talk to the QB's.  Usually the reporter that nobody likes is doing the best work.

Well, Brett will have two immediate options upon the announcement:

McCullum fired - McMurphy:  " I told you so"

McCullum retained - McMurphy:  "USF Not Serious About Basketball"

My take is that Woolard is probably having a really difficult time with the decision.

I think that Greg hit it on the head in that the decision he makes will pretty much define his own tenure at USF.  As good a guy that Mac is, it's a tough deciision to make when, in some ways your reputation and possibly own fate will be tied to a guy that has such a horrrible W/L record despite the challenges faced.  From the business perspective, he also really needs to figure out in his mind, again Greg correctly states, that this decision really needs to be aimed at the people NOT coing to the games.  if we were drawing at leat 6,000 or more per game, I bet the decision to bring Mac back would have been an easy one.  There are alot of "ifs" for DW to consider.

Another factor he is probably wrestling with is if Mac is brought back, what do you do with the contract?  Let it ride the way it is?  Mac is already complaining publicly that it's hard to recruit knowing he hanging on thread.  Retain him without an extension?  Makes it even harder to recruit!!!.  Give him an extension?  Then you have potentially extended the problem if you tank next year again?

If Mac is retained.  next year do you feel that the heat and the spotlight (responsibility for the succes of the BB team) then also get turned up on Woolard for bringing him back.   This is clearly the biggest decision for Woolard since he has been here and one way or another one will define his tenure here for a long time to come.

If DW is trying to reach people not coming to games, then there is only one way to go - Hire a big name (I know, easier said than done). Bringing in Joe Shmoe from Central Utah St. isn't going to get anyone in the stands next year.

Seriously, do you think there is any other way to get people in the stands next season?? It will take years(if at all) of struggle b/f a no-name coach like Mac can lift this program out of the gutter.

Come on DW, take a risk.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
