USF's future expansion needs go well beyond building an OCS.  I wouldn't count the aquisition of the mall property out just yet.

Not trying to feed fuel to the fire but Hillsborough County almost lost an enormous component of Moffitt Cancer Center, actually their new collaborative effort with Merck, to Pasco because of the availability of land.  USF, and Hillsborough do not want to lose Moffitt to Pasco just because of land, it would be destructive to the University if Moffitt moved all it's research out to Pasco and just kept the in-patient hospital on USF land.  They found some land near the campus to help, but it won't be enough for a long-term solution.  USF is also planning on expanding the research park.  

I am just saying with USF's building plans, and what's already on campus that can never be torn down and have really helped USF grow, expansion or land purchases are inevitable for USF.  

With that being said the OCS thoughts have always centered around the Athletics Compound.

Do stadiums up north cost more to build than a stadium in Florida? Rentschler Field and Cardinal Stadium have to be able to get through the winter when it gets really cold, like it is there now. They probably have to account for that in construction. Meanwhile it hardly ever gets below freezing in Tampa.

Also, how much site preparation would you really need if USF already owns the land? If I remember correctly, the big reason that the CITS cost so much less than every other new stadium ($168M vs. $400M+) is because TSA already owned the land it was built on.

Also...prep site/clean-up site work is always included in the cost of the stadiums (like the above).

Major chunk of Papa John's Stadium cost was the clean up of the former railyard & factory that was in that same location now as the stadium.

Also...for UCONN (paid entirely by the State of Connecticut...and not the school), that stadium site was a former Pratt & Whitney engine builder.

In UCF's case...the stadium is being built on the same site as the former practice fields...so almost zero clean-up/prep work (i.e. wasted cost) needed to be done.

If USF has some vacant empty land to build on...that would probably save the school mega $$$$ as well.

CITS cost more than $300 million... the public only paid $168 million, the rest came from the Glazers...

And stadiums down here have to withstand category 5 hurricanes, which compensates for not having to survive for long periods of time below freezing.

That I know of, no one has bought the mall yet.  

Remember, this mall has been on the market for months or years.

Generally, nothing in the US is designed to resist a Cat 5 hurricane.  The design wind speed for RJS would have been 120 mph (a mid Cat 3 hurricane).  A stadium at, or near USF would be deisgned for wind speeds closer to 110 mph (a low Cat 3 hurricane).  Uconn's stadium would have been between 100-110 mph.  Louisville, 90 mph.
