Plant's Marve, Weiner Spotted At USF Practice

TAMPA - There was a celebrity sighting at the University of South Florida practice Wednesday. At least it seemed that way.

Record-setting Plant QB Robert Marve, the Class 4A player of the year, showed up with Panthers coach Robert Weiner toward the end of practice.

After the Bulls finished their workout, seemingly every player and coach made a beeline to greet Marve and congratulate him on helping Plant win the state championship last Saturday. USF flew three assistant coaches to scout the game, Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said.

College coaches aren't allowed to comment specifically about a high school player, but when asked if he's recruiting Marve, Leavitt emphatically answered: "Absolutely, to the highest degree."

Marve verbally committed to Alabama, but since the firing of Crimson Tide coach Mike Shula, he has been in recruitment limbo.

"We'll take a look and see what's on the table and who the next coach at Alabama will be and go from there," Weiner told The Tampa Tribune earlier this week.

Leavitt was expected to make an in-home visit to Marve on Wednesday night.

LISTEN UP, FANS: Despite bringing only 5,000 to USF's historic first bowl game and this year's game being on Christmas weekend, QB Matt Grothe believes Bulls fans will show up in droves for their meeting with East Carolina in the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.

"I've heard a lot more people around the campus and just people I know that are going up there, so I wouldn't be surprised if we have 15,000 people go up," he said. "The more people we get there the better it is for our school."

COMMITMENT: Valdosta OT Lawrence McCoy (6-6, 265) verbally committed to USF, Scout.com reported.

And word aroung the campfire is that Leavitt had an in house visit (with Marve) last night also.

Sure hope he is fine with RS'ding ... this will only make him a better QB.

2008 FR and serious chance of good playing time with Tenn-Martin, UCF, Kansas, FIU and NC St on the OOC. He could really make his case for starting position.

2009 SO We play UM at Home

2010 & 2011 We play UF and the reins would definately(most likely) be his!

We really need to get this done before 'Bama gets a coach!

Oklahoma and Miami are making a big move on Marve right now. He's gonna be a tough get, especially with 3 years left on Grothe's eligibility.

A lot of the powerhouses ignored him because of the relationship he had with Mike Shula. Now that Shula is gone this guy is getting a lot of calls.

We shall see.

Hopefully he's a home boy.........if we landed him, it would set a huge precedent for other big name talent to take that extra hard look at USF.
