Hey Terry,

While we're waiting...  I'm sure you're have your choice of personalized AZ tags for your ride.  Any thought to what you'll use?

p.s.  Can you refer me to a good WR coach for my son?  He says he wants to get some instruction before his team's "boot" camp in July.

I'm getting UF SUCKS on my AZ tag, HATE UF... I'm not sure how many letters you can have! On a WR coach that is good, I'll be honest... I'm not familiar with the local talent here... S Bien would have a better idea on who to go with. How's little Matt doing? Coach Canales told me to catch about 500 passes a day just to get my hands better... I didn't have the best hands by any means (mere average at best). Find someone who can teach Matt the intracacies of route running and getting off the line... that is where Iskra and DRube were so effective. They were so fast with that first step (yes, Iskra had the best one-two move off the line because of his soccer feet IMO). Jumping rope is super effective for getting better foot work. Ant Williams used to jump rope like a mad man at least 20 minutes prior to his workout... and it showed in the way he could shed linemen. Those are little things Matt can do... pitch and catch with dad (doesn't have to be route work RTB so you don't kill your arm! (good bonding time also!) and Matt can jump rope on his own time. For hand-eye cordination, have Matt with his back to ya, tell him to turn at the same time your zinging a ball his way. When I say zing, don't kill him... but this works on his reaction time as well as getting his hands up at the last second to make a crucial catch with a DB all over him (I don't recall ever having one of those type catches (well maybe one in practice over little Solomon Burgess) but it can't hurt! Everything helps at his age!

On the license plate, I thought you'd go with a 'Bulls-1' or something like that, since the 'No2UF' message wouldn't be as effective to that audience.  Just a thought, anyway.

Matt's already a lean 5'10" and is almost ready to turn 13.  He still has Ant's gloves that were tossed to him after a game that he puts on from time to time.  He use to sleep with them on for a while after that game.

I'll try your suggestions with him and see if I can get some names from people who can give him a few sessions.  The rope is great suggestion, not only for footwork but also for conditioning.  I'll keep you posted on his progress!

5'10" at 13... ****... he's going to be 6'3" or 6'4"... maybe the weights will be the right thing for him this time next year... but make sure he stretches so he still grows! In Florida, speed is the key RTB! I don't know how serious Matt is about sports... that's all I cared about at 13... pretty much all I cared about from 5 on up (I remember playing sick on Thursday and Friday from third grade on to watch the ACC and Big East basketball tourney.) I even remember watching March Madness on public television! My parents eventually caught on a couple years down the road and just gave me those days off! My point is... if he really is psycho about sports like some of us are, see if there are any speed camps that might be recommended in this area for him. With him growing so fast, his coordination might suffer and these camps might be right for him. One note: Watch out for camps run by former NFL stars just trying to make a buck. You're better looking for a track coach running a camp! I learned the hard way! Don't let your wallet feel the crunch based on someone's NFL skills... way different from track skills! Anyways... off to work.

If I could recommend any track guy... Aaron Prather... I have a number for him but not sure if he is still training people... he used to help a lot of USF football players with speed only! He didn't have the slightest clue about football, but he knew track inside out! His number is 813-977-7339 or his pager is 813-429-6791. He is a results guy and will get Matt in the right direction! Tell him I gave you his number if you pursue this path. I recommend him highly!

Anyways, gotta run to work!

Thanks, Terry.  I'll let you know how it works out.

Anyway, back on topic, it looks like UH has probably rotated in some better defensive players.  Ellis is out and Urbanek is on the mound.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
