Is this like the Daytona Beach CC package where we get a coach and a player? Could we be getting DaJuan Wagner and his pops Milt? Come on coach... bring in the coach and his NY prodigy son with him!

Or are we going to a high school coach because no one else wants to coach here with McCullum? Which is it?

I half to say I am disappointed in this choice, and i hope he nevr gets hireed.

A HS coach? Come on, he has no BCS experience! This guy is bush league...I would rather see USF go with a guy who has Final Four superstar potential written all over him.

;)

sarcasm?

From Hoop Scoop online in 1999:

Wednesday, May 19, 1999

The New York Daily News is reporting that new Notre Dame head coach Matt Doherty has offered an assistant coaching position to Maurice Hicks, who has recorded an impressive 109-25 record in five years as the head coach at New York (Rice) NY and is recognized by the HOOP SCOOP as one of the top 10 high school coaches in America. According to the article, Hicks will visit South Bend, IN and make up his mind sometime early next month. Obviously this would give Doherty, who is originally from the New York City area himself, a direct pipeline into the city, as well as one of the top programs in the nation. The big prize would be 5'9 Jr Andre Barrett, who currently ranks as the #13 junior nationally by the HOOP SCOOP, but 6'8 Jr Kyle Cuffe and 6'6 Jr Andre Sweet also are good enough to make a major impact at Notre Dame, if Hicks takes the job and they all decide to follow their coach. However, Hicks doesn't need to be in any big hurry to get to the next level, because the freshman class at Rice promises to be his best group ever. And that's a major statement, because he's just won the last two New York State Championships. Plus this year's team finished #2 nationally in the USA Today's final rankings. Speaking of players from Rice, the article also says that 6'3 Kevin Bell is heading to prep school at Milford (Academy) CT and that he also still plans to sign with Villanova next year, if he makes it academically. Bell also is quoted as saying that 5'9 Jerome Holman from Elizabeth (St.Patrick) NJ will be joining him at Milford Academy.  If you will recall, earlier we reported that Holman would likely end up at Oakdale (St. Thomas More) CT.

From NY & NJ HS Hoops in 2002 mentioing Julius Allen:

1/30/02 Paul Brown, Gauchos: 'Congratulations to Coach Ron Brown and the Long Island University Blackbirds on their recent mini winning streak. Coach Brown has done a fantastic job with that team and definitely deserves to be considered for the permanent post. Tony Childs, an assistant to Jeff Ruland at Iona College would also be great. However, there is one person who's name must also be mentioned and that person is Julius Allen. Coach Allen is a NYC guy who currently is an assistant coach at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He was also an assistant to Ray Haskins during the Blackbirds most successful campaigns, which included an NCAA invitation and an NIT bid. During that era those games in downtown Brooklyn were special events and you were just happy to get inside the building, forget about finding a seat.

It would be fantastic to get the LIU Blackbird hype back again and there is no doubt that any of these fine young coaches could do just that!'

USF men’s basketball tabs Julius Allen for assistant position

TAMPA, Fla.  Julius Allen, possessing strong recruiting ties to the fertile basketball recruiting ground of the Northeast, was named assistant men’s basketball coach at USF today (Friday, May 14).

Allen spent the just-completed season at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He has also held assistant positions at Long Island University (1995-96  1997-98), McNeese State University (1998-99), Towson University (1999-00  2000-01), and Northeastern University (2001-02).

USF coach Robert McCullum cited Allen’s ability to recruit successfully in the Northeast while making the announcement.

“We are elated to add Julius Allen to USF’s men’s basketball family,†said McCullum. “We feel strongly that Julius will be a fine addition and will make outstanding contributions to both our basketball program and to the university. His experience at a number of schools, most of which have been in the Northeast, but also in the South, will enable him to come in and make his presence felt immediately. Julius is well-known throughout the Northeast, especially in the New York City area, as well as in New Jersey and Washington, D.C.â€Â

Allen also worked two seasons in the Continental Basketball Association with the Oklahoma City Calvary in 1992 and 1993 and four seasons in the United States Basketball League with the Westchester Stallions from 1992 through 1995.

“I am looking forward to this opportunity,†said Allen. “It is a good challenge and I am looking forward to working with Coach McCullum. His plan that is in place is what is needed there. USF has a great facility, a great location and Tampa is a great city. USF is a very attractive place for kids to want to play big time basketball as well as get a great education.

“We are going to recruit student-athletes from all over but I will be concentrating on the Northeast. They are going to come down to USF and fall in love with the place just like I did.â€Â

His McNeese State recruits from the Northeast helped the Cowboys earn two Southland Conference regular-season championships in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

“He had a very successful stint at McNeese State University and his work on the floor as well as his recruiting efforts helped lead them to two consecutive conference titles,†said McCullum. “In talking to coach Ron Everhart, the current coach at Northeastern (formerly the head coach at McNeese State), he felt strongly that without Julius’s recruiting success those two conference titles would not have been possible. Julius was able to attract players from the New York area to McNeese and it was the caliber of player that otherwise had been difficult to get.â€Â

“He is extremely well-respected and extremely well-liked throughout New York CIty. He distinguished himself even more when he coached the New York Gauchos travel team last summer to titles in every tournament they played in. These were all national tournaments.â€Â

McCullum, who has known Allen for several years, said that USF’s move to the Big East Conference beginning with the 2005-06 season played a role in his decision to select the veteran assistant coach.

“Our paths first crossed about seven years ago when I did a clinic in Miami on the role of assistant coaches,†said McCullum. “Last spring one of the first events I went to was at Houston where I saw the Gauchos play and I was really impressed with the job he did. Once the decision was made that we were moving to the Big East, his name came to the forefront. We had an outstanding group of candidates and that made the decision difficult. But in the end, his experience was what made the difference.â€Â

His experience also includes nearly two years as a physical education teacher at Clark Junior High School 45 in the Bronx and two summers wo rking with the Catholic Youth Organization in New York City. He had stints as an activity therapist at Abbott House in Queens, N.Y., a coordinator at the Bronx River Neighborhood Center, a residential aide at the South Bronx Job Corps, and a recreation director at the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx.

Allen graduated from Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla.

USF names assistant

TAMPA - Julius Allen has made the coaching rounds looking for his big break. The native New Yorker found it at South Florida.

Allen, 45, who has coached at five schools the past six seasons, was named an assistant men's basketball coach at USF.

"I grew up in Harlem, and the Big East has always been a place that I would love to work," said Allen, who coached at Howard, Northeastern, Towson, McNeese State and LIU since 1997-98. "I want to go back to the Big East, to (Madison Square) Garden, and win the Big East championship. I believe we can attract the players to do that.

"I feel like I'm 25 today, or 18. This is exciting. I've got a pep in my step."

USF coach Robert McCullum said he wanted someone with Northeast connections. According to New York's Daily News, Maurice Hicks, the coach at Rice High in Manhattan, was a finalist.

"(Allen's) experience ... will enable him to come in and make his presence felt immediately," McCullum said. "Julius is well-known throughout the Northeast, especially in the New York City area, as well as in New Jersey and Washington, D.C."

Allen played two years at an Oklahoma junior college, one at Oregon State and one at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., which he helped lead to the NAIA national title in 1981.

He played professionally in South America then got his start as a youth coach at the Boys & Girls club in the neighborhood in which he grew up.

McCullum expects to name another assistant in early June.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
