BCS Formula Set To Be Altered Again

AMELIA ISLAND - The controversial formula that left college football with two national champions last season is about to change again.

The new Bowl Championship Series formula, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report, will have just three equal parts: The Associated Press poll, the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and the average of seven computer polls.

That eliminates three ingredients of the old formula: strength of schedule, losses and quality wins.

Commissioners of the six BCS conferences could approve the new formula as early as today, at a meeting in Chicago. The formula will go into effect this fall.

``I think everybody agreed that we needed to simplify things,'' Florida State Athletic Director Dave Hart said.

Last season, Southern California and LSU were ranked first and second in both polls but, because of the old BCS formula, Oklahoma played LSU in the Sugar Bowl, the BCS national championship game. Sportswriters and broadcasters ranked USC No. 1 in their post-bowl poll; LSU won the BCS national title.

The new formula should help avert future split national championships. Three times in the past four seasons there has been controversy surrounding the teams picked to play in the BCS national championship game.

The BCS formula has undergone several tweaks since it was created in 1998. Until now, those changes have made the formula more complicated and more difficult for the public to understand.

Sure glad to be getting BCS money now BUT

Man the BCS is just such a joke, the whole thing started since everyone was complaining about split championships and a biasness inherent in polling. NOW they are all still complaining about split championships yet complain about the human judement (ie biasness) not counting enough in the formula  :

I think it all just shows that there really is no way that truely works other then to let it be decided in a playoff system.

Until that day comes (if it ever does) I will just be glad we are no longer left out!

I am both surprised and not surprised that they are removing the SOS component.  I'm surprised because having it a part of the system actually makes sense, and not surprised because everyone would really prefer to play a tuneup game in September without hurting their chances of getting a national championship.
