Yes, this was a major gaff. With all due respect, Alabama has NFL players up and down the roster, they’re bigger stronger faster. The kids put us in a position to win the game and the coaches fumbled it. You have to go for the win and keep the pressure on ‘Bama. You run it up the middle once and get nothing, you have to try a swing pass or stretch. Once 4th comes up, you have to go for it knowing it’s the end of the game and you may not get there again. Trust your players and give them a chance to win it themselves rather than conceding control. All coaches make mistakes and this was one of them. Hopefully everyone learns from the game and dominates the AAC. We have a really good team with a lot of potential. I’m excited for the rest of the season!!

We always do in the red zone with decent competition.  Just run the plays you practice for the red zone, don't get scared and just pound it up the middle.

I've been reading all the opinions in other threads.  It sounds like it is the consensus that we turtled on purpose to get a FG instead of bad playcalling.  THIS would be bad if true.

It reminds me of when CCS punted the ball to GT at the end of the game when it was clear now was the time to push all your chips in.

That’s only because I’ve made a disproportionate amount of the posts, I don’t think it seems like a consensus and is probably at best 50/50.

I also just remembered Golesh is a 2nd year HC and these are the moments where you get the experience I suppose.

Nah I did a SELECT DISTINCT on your take and counted it as 1.

I can understand his reasons for the fg on paper....but you miss 100% of shots you don't take.

He will learn from this I think.

I think the FG choice wasn’t the problem. At that situation I think it was the right call. I have a bigger issue with the plays before that. Really three runs into line? I know Brown was struggling passing the ball but, those calls were to me very vanilla specifically vs an Alabama defense.

Inside the Red Zone, especially first and goal from the 8, 9 or 10 gives me the shivers (at my old age) knowing we're going to settle for a FG.  Last night, I believe we did not attempt one fade pass to the corner of the endzone or have BB fake the handoff and run to the wide side to score.

Or a mis-direction.

I hestitate to mention this but it has been a recurrent thought of mine.  Now I want to win against every team we play especially the #4 team in the country.  But I don't want to risk injury to our sophomore QB and I think after the targeting call on Alabama and the prior sacks of BB, that maybe we kept up our safe MO.  I even voiced my concern to my son that Alabama would go headhunting.  Somehow we were keeping pace with them only down one point going into the fourth quarter.  It was working.  In hindsight we were too vanilla but could that be out of a protective stance?  IDK.
