GAME DAY vs. Southern Miss

After pushing No. 4 Alabama in a one-point game into the fourth quarter, USF returns to the road to renew a series with Southern Miss that has been idle for 20 years and play in Hattiesburg, Miss. for the first time since 2003. It will mark just the third Bulls game in the state of Mississippi, the other two were both losses at Southern Miss. Quarterback Byrum Brown is coming off his fifth career 100-yard rushing game and the Bulls defense had an impressive showing vs. Alabama for the second straight year (despite the deceiving 42-16 final score).

VS. GOLDEN EAGLES: USF and Southern Miss met for four straight years from 2000 to 2004, the last two both as members of Conference USA, with the Golden Eagles holding a 3-1 lead. The Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings and are 2-0 in Hattiesburg, Miss., including a 27-6 victory in USF’s last trip there in 2003. Southern Miss claimed a 27-20 victory in the last meeting 20 years ago in 2004 in Tampa.

BRUISING #4 BAMA: A glance at the final score does not do justice to the battle USF gave No. 4 Alabama on Nick Saban Field dedica tion night in Tuscaloose. The Bulls trailed by one (14-13) into the fourth quarter and were in a one-score game (21-16) with six minutes to play. The Bulls defense held Alabama through its first 12 drives - giving up two touchdowns and holding the Tide offense to 195 yards, seven punts and two fumbles – before Alabama posted four touchdowns and 198 yards on its final four drives of the game in the last six minutes. • A year after sacking Alabama five times, the Bulls posted three sacks on Saturday against Jalen Milroe, making for eight sacks vs. Top 10-ranked Tide teams the last two years. USF held Milroe to two yards rushing and 199 passing.

BROWN CARRIES THE LOAD: For the second-straight year, Byrum Brown led the rushing attack vs. Alabama. A year after logging 92 yards on 20 carries vs. the Tide, Brown carried the ball 23 times (equaling the Bulls 23 other carries by four players on the night) for 108 yards, marking his fifth-career 100-yard rushing game -the third most by a QB in USF history, three behind BJ Daniels (8) in second.

TURNOVER TRAIN: After forcing three turnovers at Alabama, USF has forced two or more turnovers in four straight games and three or more in four of their last six, dating to last season. The Bulls rank No. 10 nationally in turnovers forced (5).

In order of importance for me:

  1. Defense maintains high level of play demonstrated in first 3 Qs last week
  2. Byrum passes efficiently (I think we'll see three through the air, too)
  3. Some creativity in running game.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
