I hate to say it this way. But 3:11 AM, alcohol, a bunch of people in a small space, and lots of guns is a powder keg. (Blame is 100% on the killer, not shifting any blame to the victims, just saying that the surroundings made the outcome more likely)

Even though they had a right to defend themselves, I wish they would have just avoided the situation altogether.  The dude was a bum. I have to assume they all knew each other. Sarasota seems like one of those places where everybody knows each other.

They appeared to have confronted him while they were both carrying, definitely could have been avoided.

He was already a  felon ,was arrested  and out on bail for sexual assault  and battery charges of a minor under 12  from March,  and was breaking the law by carrying a firearm as a felon  Amazing criminals don't follow laws and one young man is  dead and others are hurt forever because he was allowed out on bail. Seems the Justice system and parole board failed the citizens again.

Florida is an permitless carry state now. So there will be many more gun carrying people having disagreements amongst themselves. I think Desantis is working on a bill to permit open carry.

Criminals don't follow  the current  gun laws see the murderer of Mr. BATTIE. He wasn't allowed to own guns as a felon and was out on bail for some nasty  stuff against  a minor under 12. You can look it up on manatee County Sheriff office. You can't legislate out hate, disregarded  for human life, craziness, and evil out of people.

Were the Batties on their way to hunt or target practice? No, so they were carrying illegally.  A law is not going to change any of this,  the felon should not have been carrying or even out on bond. It is a tragedy however very avoidable had they not made some very questionable decisions, you can place responsibility anywhere you want but you must assign some to the brothers in this case.

In Florida are you able to carry as long as you are not a felon. Are you indicating that the Batties were convicted felons?

Those are not the requirements in Florida.  People who are legally allowed to own a gun (i.e. not a felon) can carry a firearm at all times as long as they avoid certain places.

Moreover, they are allowed to defend themselves (stand your ground).  So the Batties' decision to return fire is also not breaking the law.

Nope, the other guy was, here is the explanation I read, Florida is not an open carry like Texas. Either way you go out packing and confront a thug late night, stuff can happen.
