You're coming out with confident statements about who will not get hired.  If you are right, you earn credibility.  When you are wrong, you don't.

I'll take it either way. If we hire Gruden or xCJS I'll happily eat crow as I've said I'd be happy with either.

Much more complicated, since the coach can't pay NIL from the taxpayers, the coach has to recruit players that fans, companies, boosters will pay ENOUGH to keep them at USF.  That is highly unlikely.  If USF cannot get the community's businesses behind it (Sorry, it won't be FA getting subscriptions from everyday fans), players that want higher NIL will constantly depart.  I think every coach knows it, but for our fan base, which is demolished and our community support which is light, a coach may have to do much more than know how NIL works in areas that have the support.  So, better said, the coach has to get the community's buisnesses behind the program.  Or maybe theat's the job of someoene else.  The coach does have to coach.

This is exactly it. The HC has a vested interest in robust NIL support for the program. More hand shaking and kissing babies will only help. I get that the coach has to coach but it's almost like the job description has changed. The HC now has a dual mandate of coaching and lobbying for NIL dollars from the community/boosters to help attract top talent for their recruiting initiative.

That's fine, that's Trip's qualification.

Actually, that was me just being a smart ass. I wouldn't rule out somebody who hasn't been a head coach in the last five years as long as he's had head coaching experience here. I'm obviously not that familiar with our list of candidates because I don't think I know who the other ruled out candidate would be.

Fair enough.

What I think we need to really figure out is why doesn't USF have a booster club.  The Bull Backers attempted to do that years ago.  USF said "no thanks".   A booster club should be out raising millions.  That's what USF should be thinking about.  Not the coach, boosters.  I've mentioned it here before, the ASU collective wasn't even fully formed when it already had more than one million in committed donations to NIL.  USF, once again, is behind the curve.

You do know the school and coach can have NOTHING to do with that?  That's the job of businesses, collectives, fan sites, boosters, etc.

This isn't actually true.  When coaches are meeting with boosters, they can absolutely tell boosters that a university needs indirect support and ask them to donate to both the university AND the players.  Head coaches, who are nearly always millionaires, can also donate if they see fit.

The ripple of NIL in college football is already being felt immensely at places like East Carolina, and the Pirates are now trying to find a way to adapt.

That’s pretty obvious. They can’t direct funds.

I wasn’t aware a coach could pay NIL, if that’s what you mean by donate. Either way that will be another avenue for abuse.

As I mentioned above, USF can get behind owners and boosters in organizations, but I don’t see much activity in that regard.

If you had to list five, what would they be?  First thing that come to mind?  For me:

  1. Previous head coaching experience
  2. Proven, known experience recruiting Florida
  3. Proven, known ability to develop players
  4. Experience identifying talent on the portal
  5. A demonstrated undying, contagious competiviteness

That's it, I did it in 45 seconds.  I might need to edit, but that's first pass.  Whatcha got?

I would like to add a bit more at number 2. Proven, know. Experience recruiting Florida at a lower level. I feel that certain P5 schools assist in recruiting themselves to some degree.

I rarely pay attention to coach's pressers (unless it's Coop's post game ones) but do remember CJS making a point about the NIL becoming a huge factor in recruiting ..... and I think it may be pretty bad timing for USF. Our overall football donor/fan base is finally maturing to the point where many are able to give more, possibly evidenced by the elevated donor levels since MK took over, but the ante has now been upped with monies needed to go to NIL's.

The more I look at it from this perspective, I'm thinking the next hire needs to be a splash hire from a pr perspective and hopefully winning football will accompany ..... and sorry Leavittites, I'm not sure he fits that bill. He's got his cult within the USF community but not sure if it's enough for the financial bump needed ..... it would be awesome if it was.

What drove this was looking at FAU's financials. They went from a donor level of $1.4M in 2017 to $8.5M in 2018. Can the class tell me what that coincides with, "Anyone ... Bueller ... Anyone?"

I think you'd find his "cult" is the majority of mature, financially-able people with at least a passing interest in USF Football.

Think the next coach needs to win 6 wins or more in just about every season…

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
