Taggart  didn't have a winning record here overall, win a conference championship, or have really any huge wins like Auburn, West Virgina, Notre Dame, Fsu, etc...

Taggart I believe is the 2nd best HC at USF behind Leavitt. He is a not even close to being the best USF coach as he didn’t have many big wins against top 25 like Leavitt had. I credit Taggart for getting USF out of the mess left by Skip. Now the pressure is on Scott to get USF out of the mess Strong left.

We haven't had any coach outwork Leavitt on the field or off the field yet. Leavitt took rather unknown or low ranked players and built them into college stars and NFL Talent. He had every player buying into his vision and attacking anything that hit the field. The team and fans were all in because of his energy and passion. He built a program from zero and was beating the big dogs of college football rather quick.

I agree. Great points. I would rank coaches at USF as this:

Leavitt>Taggart>Skip>Strong.  Scott is too early for me to judge rn

Leavitt did more than all of those underperformers combined. Scott the jury isn't out but it isn't exactly looking great. I would love to be proven wrong.

And don’t forget Skip beat Clemson in the bowl game basically with Leavitt’s players. Skip didn’t recruit like Leavitt. Leavitt put his heart & soul into the USF program. Skip just didn’t recruit they way that USF young program needed. USF went in another direction by not retaining Leavitt’s coaching staff. That is my point. Not sure why people can’t understand that lol.

Which may not have been entirely Skip's fault ....

I hope the powers that be learned from the hiring of Strong.

Never hire a coach who failed massively at their last job.

Fair enough. Not many would of been able to replace Leavitt’s dedication for his USF program so I believe USF messed up by firing him. Set the program back decades and now we are playing catch-up. It actually took UCiF going to the P5 before USF finally awakened from their lackadaisical coma.  I see USF reaching new heights in the future which I hope is very soon.

This is true, Skip didn't have Leavitt's fire for the program (no one would, really)... But don't forget a REAL big part of that is because the administration put a bunch of red tape on Skip with a committee that had to review every recruit BEFORE Skip and his coaches could offer a scholarship.

Leavitt took quite a few "marginal" students... who were great athletes.  As a result, the APR (Academic Progress Rate) dropped and USF was in danger of losing football scholarships.

Skip COULDN'T recruit like Leavitt, even if he was able to have the same passion.

Taggart smoked UCF so think you got that confused with Charlie Strong.

you're right.

Taggart couldn't beat Temple to get us to the Conference championship game.

Defense was still bad his last year.  When it was brought up at the time I believe his response was "8-2"

Temple had Taggart’s number for some reason. Only way Taggart saved his job was because he was willing to sit down and listen to others unlike many other coaches would do. Basically Taggart’s old high school coach helped save his job at USF.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
