We are scheduled to play them again though, right?

Yes, we are playing them again in a few years.

Not sure where @puc86 is these days, but I remember most of his argument being we shouldn't have assisted you along the way as we did by even recognizing you as a peer.

You didn't cause our problems, our "leadership" did.  Recognizing UCF was only one of their many mistakes over last 15 years.

My official position is we knew as a program there was nothing to be gained by playing them every season, at least not in a 1 for 1. People claim that we were blackballing them (I don’t think we had that power when the league was on more stable ground). Then when we were 1 of 3 that has any intention of being a founding member of the AAC we either had less power, changed our mind or never really were blackballing anyone.

Either way we went balls deep into being stronger together with a team we knew for more than a decade brought nothing to our lives. Even thousands of years ago people knew when you put two unevenly yoked oxen together the lesser one drags down the other but it’s adorable that the guy that won’t be the ad when it’s time to schedule again says that if it were possible he would definitely do it but unfortunately it’s not.

If they decide the best thing for their future is perpetual 1:1’s with a left behind they deserve whatever happens to them because the only people that ever have interest in creating 1:1 rivalry games with someone in an unequal conference are the people in the lower conference or an idiot in a state legislature (because it’s dumb on every level for the people with additional station in life).

UCF's problem is that the (Oklahoma/Texas-less) Big12 is the red headed stepchild of the P5.  They have half a chair at the table...which is still better than the AAC, but it's not a huge step above USF and they know it.

If they were in the SEC they wouldn't want 1-1s.  But the Big12 without Texas/Oklahoma is a wounded animal and it needs more scheduling certainty.  Remember the Big12 was left outta that Big10/Pac12/ACC 'scheduling alliance' aka 'eff the SEC if they expand/only play games against themselves'.  Should the Big12 end up not being able to play the other Power conferences, they'll need someone else like the AAC.

So yeah UCF has to act like they want to play us for now...at least until conf realignment/playoff expansion dust settles.

*Bigger boy* conference but not big boy like SEC or even ACC.  Basically the equivalent of the Big East when other conferences had just poached WVU/Louisville/etc.

I am definitely not saying USF wants to be left behind.  The Big12 is our only shot at relevance.

What I *am* saying is the Big12 is still looked upon as the little kid at the big boys table, and again that is objectively true when you look at how

A) they are the league being picked apart

B) they haven't had a "real" conference championship game in years because their conference wasn't setup that way with enough teams/divisions (oh where have I heard that before cough cough Big East in final years)

C) they were left out of the acc/big10/pac12 schedule alliance

And so the big concerns for anyone joining that conference (UCF/Cincy/and even USF fans hopeful for the future) are

1) will ESPN still pay big bucks for the next media deal when the top 2 marquee programs have bailed

2) will the conference be poached again if others expand

3) will the conference's schedule be strong enough to be relevant for playoffs, in the event that other conferences choose not to play it

I think the Big East was slightly more unstable and F'd up than today's big 12.  Having 16 conference schools and only 8 that played football was also a disaster waiting to happen.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
