I guess I'm missing something. Does this vote in January also mandate the number of conference games played? If it doesn't, why couldn't the Big 12 keep playing 9 conference games even if it does have to split into 2 divisions of 5 teams?

The issue is can a team have two divisions with five teams each play a championship game. It is not about how many conference games a team plays. The ACC wanted to have the two top teams regardless of division standing play each other for the championship. The Big10 said that was not fair that only champions of each division should play each other for the championship. This forces the Big12 to have a championship game but they want to do it with two divisions with five teams each.

Trip was referring to this part of your post.

The big 12 teams will have to schedule an extra out of conference game against a legitimate team.

What does this have to do with a Big 12 championship game?

If the Big10 gets permission to go with two divisions of five teams, then conference members will "consider" the need of scheduling decent P5 teams to make up for their conference size. This would be done to decrease the media/committee/other conference perception that a smaller conference means less quality and easier pathway to the playoff (my discussion with Databull).

Of course they "don't" have to do this (they can still play nine conference games) but the perception hurt the conference last year (especially with Baylor...who did have a weak schedule out of conference) and may have hurt  Oklahoma's ranking this year in the playoff.

All of this is moot of course until we see the vote results for a team having a championship with ten conference members.

It is a great question. I think it could be answered with another question. If USF was playing Kansas State and the Gators had a game at the same time, who would get the most viewers? The same would be true for FSU. Would fans/alumni of these teams watch USF in Tampa, Orlando, or the state in general?

Depends what is at stake. As of right now, I would say the Gators may have the edge. Several years into it, if USF is playing for something meaningful and Gators have just an average year going, Advantage in viewership to USF. Bottom line in either case is that the Big 12 gains viewership with something to build on in this marketplace that they would not otherwise have had.

Right now the NCAA rule states that a conference must have 12 or more teams to have a CCG.  B12 wants to change that to 10 teams "with the 2 top rated teams playing in the CCG."  B1G chimes in and says whooooa.... We feel the leagues should be set up the same way regardless of how many teams there are.  The winner of division A plays the winner of division B, not the 2 highest rated teams that could be from the same division.  The ACC wants the same thing the B12 has proposed.

An undefeated USF team that is ranked #9 (assuming you mean in the final committee poll) would also have won their CCG and would be playing in a NY6 game under current rules.

If the highest rated G5 rule was canceled and USF was ranked #9 they still would be going to an awesome bowl game, and proabably one of the NY6 games (Sugar Bowl this year is Miss state 12th vs Okl State 16th) but still no shot at the playoffs.

Actually the AAC wanted to have the two highest tanked teams playing each other. This is what got the Big12 comish in a tizzy. They have changed from this initial position since then however.

Nope. I'm talking about 12-0 vs a 10-2 P5 team ranked #8.
