OK. Let me stop and say anyone saying staying in the American is just as good as the Big 12 is crazy.

As a member of the AAC we scheduled a 2 for 1 with Texas.

As a potential member of the Big 12, we would play conference schools 1 for 1.

Texas. Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Baylor, OK State, WVU, TCU, KState would all be the top dog in the American. And the American would love Kansas for basketball.

The only school that might be middle of the pack AAC is Iowa State.

Why do you say they wouldn't add a 5th Texas team? Houston is one of the biggest cities in the country, and the school is growing very fast (under the leadership of Judy disciple and former USF provost Renu Khator, funny enough).  Given the population here, those games would likely be selling out for any home games against UT, Baylor, Oklahoma, Tech, and TCU. It's also likely it would mean a lot of eyeballs on the TV.

The B12 alreadly like has a lot of TV eyeballs in Houston, and those are the only ones that count.  No one care about attendance for home games anymore.

Actually unlike most Texas cities, there's not a critical mass of a single B12 school here. Part of it is due to the oil industry and the transient nature of the city. A transplant or someone who went to UH is not religiously following B12 football any more than one who went to USF is religiously following the ACC or SEC (which is to say some, but not as a rule) or one who went to Memphis is following the SEC. In any event, UH has twice as many students as Memphis, way more money floating around, better facilities, and a better team right now. I don't see how Memphis has any significant edge.

How many here have celebrated the birth of a child since the start of this thread?

My son was not quite 10 months old when this was created.  He'll be 4 years old in 3 months.

While that may be true, theres probably enough Big 12 alumni in total in the area to make it a Big 12 city.  Honest question, can you watch just about any big 12 game on TV there?  I would venture to guess absolutely.  So they're not adding a new market by adding Houston.  They may gain viewership in that market, but they're not expanding their exposure at all.  Memphis (or ideally us) gets them into a new market.  It likely ensures all big 12 games are now part of a regional coverage in that market.  Meaning that in Memphis instead of getting Syracuse v Va Tech, you would get Texas Tech v Okie State.  It gains all big 12 teams exposure in that market.

I don't think anyone is actually saying that the American is just as good as the Big 12; however, I think the intent of the comment you are responding to was simply to show that IF the AAC COULD build itself up and start demanding closer to Power 5 money, then it would not be such a bad place to be.  Bottom line is dollars.  If you pay the AAC the same as the Big 12, why would we want to leave?

File this under, "For What It's Worth":

Greg Flugaur @flugempire 10h10 hours ago

B12 will expand for 2017 FB season. And according to B10 perception it won't be BYU or UCF.

Greg Flugaur @flugempire 10h10 hours ago

More than a few reasons BYU is out..but location has reared its head. 11:00am games not going away. Travel expenditures is a key component

Greg Flugaur @flugempire 1h1 hour ago

B12, according to what the B10 now believes, has vetoed the idea of moving into a 3rd time zone. BYU location >> (-) vs BYU Big Brand (+)

Greg Flugaur @flugempire 1h1 hour ago

Quite a change. But reasons have been stated. If B10 has it read right...B12 near future will consist of: CINCY/UH Or CINCY/Memphis

Greg Flugaur @flugempire 1h1 hour ago

Important note. B12 expansion Train is further down the track than believed.

I always love hearing from this guy's anonymous Big 10 source on deeply secret Big 12 issues.  It was better than the "if we beat FSU we are in the Big 12 and UCF is out" rumor.

Yeah you can probably catch almost all Big 12 games on tv depending on your provider. The vast majority are on national channels though, not local (in fact there are none on the local sports channel, but I don't know if UH would change that). If it's not more TV eyes, though, I don't know what they stand to gain by adding a "new market" in Memphis. Hopefully we add the recruiting allure, which I don't think many of these other schools provide. If we make the move in the near future, I think hat has to be the primary reason. Things not looking good for the USF/UCF combo overall though, if that is indeed the package, given the ongoing dumpster fire in Orlando and the miserable last 6 years here.
