Harlan's got this. It's a shame, had we had him all along, we *might* not be in this mess.

Explanation: Probably wouldn't have fired Leavitt. Would've canned Prado and Heath earlier, which even if we missed the fluke NCAAT (which was an amazing time and a great roadtrip to Ohio and Tenn) would've been worth it for longterm viability.

While I am optimistic, Harlan hasn't shown anything yet. As I recall, his one hire had a fairly miserable record last year despite the continued enthusiasm.

What about Kingston? Antigua didn't have much to work with last year, but is recruiting at a level that will hopefully turn into wins quickly.

You are correct, I forgot Kingston was a Harlan hire.  Still, it is a stretch to assume that football would be in better shape and a huge assumption to think Leavitt would still be here.

We have a ways to go before we can annoint Harlan the messiah.

I couldn't agree more.  So far, he does seem to be a nice upgrade over the DW though.

The Big12 isn't the only possible expansion conference.  Here's another conference that is feeling like it needs a conference championship game to get into the NC playoff.  I feel pretty good about our chances with this one.

Big 12 coaches: Another playoff snub could bring back title game

“I think this year will indicate a lot,†Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “Whether we’re being hurt by not having a championship game.â€

[...]

“That 13th game on that Saturday, I think, is important,†said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen, whose Mountaineers travel to Kansas State in the only other Big 12 game on championship weekend. “Right now, less than half our league is playing a 12th game on that Saturday. So this year, what happens if Oklahoma is 12-0 or 11-1 and they’re in discussion and they’re not playing on that last Saturday?

“To me, you have to have a championship game.â€

And when the NCAA removes the 12-team requirement, the Big 12 will add a championship game without adding any teams. :-/

Here's an interesting dilemma. According to this article 5 big 12 schools were heading to the big 10 in 2010. If that happened would any school in a G5 position jump to a sinking big 12 or absorb members from the big 12 and create a 6th big conference

The Big 12 seems to be making the same mistakes that the Big East did when it comes to expansion.  The Big East didn't want to expand in the early 200s and lost Miami, VaTech, and BC.  They didn't want to expand again in the 2010s and lost Syracuse, Rutgers, Lousiville, West Virginia, and Pitt.

^ I agree. I hate to be negative on expansion but I just don't believe we'll ever end up in a "power" conference. Any conference that would be willing to take us (Big XII) would probably wait until it absolutely has to, and by then it'll be too late to save the stability of the conference. Much like what happened with the Big East.

So, in the meantime, I just want to enjoy my football team, regardless of conference. The reality is that very few teams have a legitimate shot at winning a national title anyways. It's the downside of college football.

You'll have to refresh my memory on how not expanding was the driving force behind those schools leaving ...

If half the Big 12 schools leave, we are in.  This would be great for us.  We would have a  number of "name brand" teams along with the likes of Boise, BYU, UCF, USF, Cincy, and Houston.  Heads and tales better than any G5 conference out there.  We would have a strong case for a power conference.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
