Based on the last 3 years or so UCF has been in the public eye in football. Let's see what happens after this year. They lost quite a bit.

Even this past year, there is no way anyone that has watched any amount of football can say that UCF wasn't one of the luckiest teams ever. Bizarre play against Houston, Hail Mary in their last game. I am probably missing at least one maybe 2 miracle wins.

Does that really merit them over us? I would really hope that with that much money at stake that a conference would due some deeper due diligence than just look at the W-L columns over a 2 year period.

Their increased name recognition is based on the past 2 or 3 years plus the emergence of Blake Bortles. That name recognition, as we found out, is fleeting.

They beat Baylor, that was resounding for them.

They still have the coach that took them there.

USF is an unknown, separated form it's past successes.

Hope Willie T can get us back to relevance.

So you are the B12 commissioner.  You look at UCF and see a team that has done reasonably well recently, for a Group of 5 conference.  And you see that they have the coach that took them there.

Then you see he is 68 years old.  And most likely will retire this year to become full time AD.

What about UCF gives you assurances the team will remain competitive going forward?

Does it matter their age? A younger coach at a G5 school winning BCS games is going to get lured to a P5 job in the majority of cases. Obviously O'Leary was at the end of his career so it didn't happen to him.

How was their fanbase when they were losing? That's a more relevant question.

They were always a bunch of idiot a-holes, just in a lot less numbers.

As long as they spend money when the team loses, the Big 12 doesn't care. I doubt their fanbase has gotten to the point of USF's. At least in the past 15 years.

It's pretty doubtful that any conference will bother to do that kind of research, winning years vs losing years money spent, blah blah blah. Bottom line is that, as we've been told over and over again over the years, the two schools are pretty much interchangeable in the big picture. Right now the football pendulum is swung their way and IF conference realignment happens again shortly and IF recent football success is a swaying factor, we're screwed IF it comes down between them and us for a spot.

They don't have to, the AD will have donor and attendance records by season.

If ECU were in a bigger TV market, with that fanbase, hard to not see them going P5.

Reference a few posts up, but I read a quick article on the GOL-as-interim-AD today in the breakroom (Slantinel) that said one of the UCF president's reasons for installing GOL is that he is about the only name-brand face that anyone in the P5 would recognize, so it should help their P5 upgrade prospects. Goes on to say how much he doesn't fit the mold for an AD...no kidding, LOL, and he'd probably be one of the first in line to admit it. If I'm in a P5 board for expansion, I think "hmm, they went that far? Let's see how we can toy with these kids".
