It is looking more like the BIG 12 will be forced to expand or not get a team in the playoff. The other top 4 conferences are already crying to everyone that it is not fair that the BIG 12 does not have to play a conference championship game. Just hoping that USF can get their ass in gear before it is too late.

BIG 12 expansion is likely USF's last chance to avoid long-term national irrelevancy.  If we miss that ship there won't likely be another for a VERY long time.

I think the P5 are going to let the dust settle before there's any expansion. In the event that the Big XII does expand (not entirely sure just how much pressure there is for that), this article seems to think that Cinci & UCF would be the best fit. It mentions USF, but ....

http://www.bcsnn.com/big-xii/777-big-12-expansion-ucf-cincinnati-byu-uconn-and-usf.html

The most likely scenario for the expansion, which is most certainly going on behind closed doors, is Cincinnati joining to bridge West Virginia and UCF joining for the extremely valuable Florida footprint. The only way USF can get into the Big 12 is if the situation involves expansion to 14 teams or they open up the 2014 season 6-0 in football and UCF pulls some strings to bring them along in a one-two combo deal to reach twelve teams. The Bulls lack of their own stadium (they play in the Buccaneers' Raymond James Stadium) which is another reason the Big 12 isn't looking at them. If somehow UCF did convince the Big 12 to accept their little brother as well, Cincinnati and BYU would both be left playing the waiting game. So what can you expect? It's hard to tell, but it's likely that Cincinnati and Central Florida will be traveling to Austin, Norman and Morgantown in the 2016 college football season. UCF won't be on an island as far away as WVU was and their upside is too great to ignore. In the meantime, we will just have to listen to athletic directors talk about how expansion is not happening, just like they did around 2011. And we remember how that round of musical chairs "ended".

And here's some musings from June Jones of SMU vis-a-vis moving the G5 to play in spring instead of fall. I read the article three times and have yet to find any reason why this sounds like a good idea. Touting the USFL - a failed league - is probably not the wagon you wanna hitch to.

That article sounds extremely one sided.

Anyone who thinks moving any kind of football to the Spring should reanalyze the costly effects of doing so:

  • Teams would no longer have the same recruiting cycle.
    • NSD is the first Wednesday of February, which would essentially be right at the "start" of the league.
    • This is a huge deal for football, as, unlike other spring sports, the rest of the country would be playing at a different time. Recruits would be forced to 'wait'
    • It would be impossible to get signees on campus before the season starts, so a "2014 class" recruit wouldn't see the field or participate with the team until 2015.
  • The NFL Combine is in March.
    • As in, how would the non-P5 schools send their eligible players to participate, if they're entrenched in the middle of the football season? N
    • As in, why would a recruit go to a school that would not be able to send their kids to step one of a job interview?
    • And for that matter, NFL Scouts (and whomever sends the invites out) wouldn't have enough footage of the season by time the invites are sent out, so the number of Non-P5 athletes at the combine would essentially become zero.
    • So is there a break for the combine? Everyone has a bye week on the week of the combine? That's ludicrous.
  • Battling with other sports.
    • on a National scale, as others have said, there's the NBA, MLB, other college sports (Softball, Baseball, the world series 'n such). College Football works so well as it is because the majority of the games happen on Saturdays. Lately, there's been a Thursday night game and a rare Friday night game, but these still generally avoid NFL games. Baseball and Basketball happen every day, and most definitely on Saturdays and Sundays. That's when people are off work and can attend games. So the attendance for these sporting events will definitely steal from potential attendance to college games.
    • the NBA finals is one of the premier championships on TV. In many cases, its the only thing people watch. That directly conflicts with TV viewership for football games.
  • Revenue from OOC games.
    • Who does the Non-P5 play for their OOC games (if they even exist anymore)? Who does the P5 play?
    • If the FCS still plays in the Fall, the only other available competition is the other non-P5 teams. Which wouldn't be bad, except for the lack of cash flow from teams paying to play other teams. Some schools need that money (Probably more so on the FCS level, but nonetheless)

I had others, but I need to get ready for work. But nonetheless, the idea to move any part of college football to the spring is ridiculous, and it clashes with the NFL.

Which is why I have to wonder why June Jones would even say this? It's a non-starter. It's almost as if there's a sense of desperation that somehow, if you're not a P5 participant all is lost. 98.7 commentary from yesterday was that there is a world of haves and have-nots...everywhere...in real life, and in college football. While the term "have not" may sound derogatory, I think that trying to pretend / concoct / artificially inflate the status of G5 football is not going to work out long term. How long before we see a G5 championship game / playoff?

Just because I want to find something to argue with in this article, why does the writer say "football is made for the fall"?  That is kind of a ridiculous argument.  What makes fall better than spring?  Summer I can understand.  But playing in the fall means camp in the summer and people die while having training camp in 90 degree heat.

I always love the "because we've always done it that way" arguments.

eh, just another guy's opinion.  This guy know's nothing just like the rest of them know nothing.  Willing to bet the only reason this guy knows UCF is their one good year at a better level.  They were far from dominating the conference.  Let's see what things look like half way through their season if they have already lost a couple of games.  They will be back to obscurity.

If the P5 is going to be allowed to be autonomous from the NCAA then they surely can change the rule on how many teams a conference needs for a championship game.
