Some of you may be too young to actually remember, but we had a successful Spring league (USFL), then Donald trump got a hold of it and f'd it all up. He thought that they could go head to head with the NFL. It was a fun exciting league. The Tampa Bay Bandits were coached by Steve Spurrier.

Much more fun to watch than the Bucs - I had season tickets

Was devastated when it all went tits up.

The USFL WAS NOT successful. A handful of teams did well but it was losing significant $. Even if Trump did not push for fall the league it only had a few years to survive. The G5 would die a slow death under a spring market full of NBA, NHL, MLB and other events associated with the start of summer.

The NFL got tax exempt status when the AFL merger occurred because they were worried about going under. So for it's stage of development, it was about as successful as could be expected. And not only did a number of the USFL cities not have any other pro sport at the time, the NFL later expanded to these cities so there was a viable base of football fans (Nashville, Jacsonville, Arizonia) and Baltimore after the Colts left for Cleveland. No one can predict the future of something like that, who knows what could have happened if Trump and 10 of the owners didn't decide to go head to head with the NFL in the Fall. That decision caused chaos. They actually had a $175 million TV offer from ABC for 4 years and another large offer from ESPN but due to things like owners not wanting to compete with NFL teams in the same location in the Fall and bad financial decisions, it was doomed. A consulting firm even said to stay in the Spring, but Trump knows all. Oh and did you see Trump Casino in Atlantic City is closing? That guy has destroyed so much.

The best thing about the USFL, besides the talent, was it being FUN.

Didn't they start with a salary cap? IF I remember correctly, Trump screwed that up when he offered some bogus employment posititions to circumvent the cap.

In that 30 for 30 documentary they meet briefly with Trump and he still thinks the move to the Fall was right. I wonder how much money he's lost and how many people got the axe due to his decisions over his business career.

Regardless, NO WAY I would want to see CFB in the spring.

So let me get this straight. The P5 if they break off can make their own rules and the rest of the conferences are stuck with the NCAA BS rule book?

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
