*  South Florida, Memphis, San Diego State, and UCF have hurdles to clear with their academic reputations (all rank outside the USN&WR top 150).  But if the Big 12 needs to grow and wants to be daring, it can open up some new territory by reaching into Tennessee.  Grabbing a California or Florida school would carry more risk.  Remember, the league has already discovered that there are some troubles scheduling league games with distant member West Virginia.

^ I can't ******* stand when bloggers cite USN&WR as a reason for doubting the academic reputation. If we were added to the Big XII our research expenditures would fit right in. 

 

Research dollars is generally what a university is "graded on" not the undergraduate experience (where we admittedly need help, but have made dramatic improvements even since I was a student) according to some inane metrics. I know people that have these types of discussions and USNWR almost never come up.
